South Korean President May Grant Pardon To Jailed Samsung Leader

Samsung Lee Jae yong smartphone

South Korean President Moon Jae-in will reportedly meet leaders of the country’s top four conglomerates over a luncheon on Wednesday. While the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage will likely be the center of the talks, there are speculations that the President may drop a hint on the possibilities of granting a pardon to imprisoned Samsung leader Lee Jae-yong.

Calls seeking a presidential pardon for Lee have been growing over the past few weeks. South Korea’s five major business lobby groups in April submitted a petition to the President. Several religious groups and individuals have also separately submitted similar requests. Even some US companies have thrown their weight behind this idea.

They all argue that Lee could play an important role in addressing the ongoing chip shortage problem. Samsung is mulling a multi-billion investment to expand its chip manufacturing capacity. However, Lee’s imprisonment is delaying those investment plans. This could have disastrous consequences for South Korea’s economy as well as affect the global ship supply chains in the long term.

President Moon hasn’t opposed the idea of granting the de facto Samsung leader a pardon as well. He last month suggested that Lee is an important figure for enhancing South Korea’s competitiveness in the chip industry. So him meeting the country’s top business executives is certain to raise speculations that Lee could get a presidential pardon.

The Samsung Vice Chairman has been in jail since January this year. He is serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence in a 2017 bribery case involving then South Korea president Park Geun-hye, who is also behind bars. He decided against appealing the sentence. So he’ll have to serve out the full term unless the country’s President grants him a pardon or parole.

President Moon may consider a special measure for the Samsung leader

According to The Korea Times, tomorrow’s luncheon will be attended by senior executives from Samsung, Hyundai, LG, and SK Group. Incidentally, these four companies also contributed to a successful summit between Moon and US President Joe Biden on May 21. They have all pledged big investments in the semiconductor, electric vehicle battery, and automobile sectors in America. The four companies have promised a combined $39.45 billion in investments on American soil.

Samsung alone has pledged an investment of $17 billion in the US. So there are high expectations that President Moon may consider a “special measure” for the company’s imprisoned de facto leader Lee Jae-yong.

“Under the circumstance, there’s a fair chance that the release of Lee, in the form of either a pardon or on parole, will be brought up during the luncheon,” said Shin Yul, a political science professor at Myongji University. “I bet the President is dying for one of the luncheon guests to raise the issue.”

This will reportedly be the first such meeting in Moon’s final year in office. So with presidential elections scheduled for next year, letting Lee walk out free might trigger a backlash from the opposition camp. “Fairness, precedents, and public sentiment must be considered,” President Moon had said last month. As such, he may opt for parole, rather than a pardon for Lee.

However, while parole will set Lee free, he will not be able to work. Meanwhile, with a pardon, he can resume office immediately. So the latter is like what Samsung and other South Korean businesses want. All eyes and ears on tomorrow’s high-profile luncheon now.

Intel CEO Suggests The Ongoing Chip Shortage Might Last For Years

intel xmm 8160 modem 1 press img 01

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger believes that the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage could potentially last for several years. Speaking at a virtual session of the Computex trade show in Taipei on Monday, Mr. Gelsinger suggested that the growing trend of work and learn from home following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a “cycle of explosive growth in semiconductors”. Chip manufacturers are struggling to cope with the current demand. It may now take the chip industry several years to resolve this problem.

“But while the industry has taken steps to address near-term constraints it could still take a couple of years for the ecosystem to address shortages of foundry capacity, substrates, and components,” Gelsinger said, according to a Reuters report.

Intel CEO reiterates the global chip shortage isn’t ending anytime soon

In an interview with The Washington Post in April, Gelsinger had said that this chip shortage problem might take at least a couple of years to resolve. He has now reiterated that opinion. Perhaps his recent comments suggest it could stretch for much longer than just two years.

Intel is one of the very few companies that can actually manufacture a semiconductor chip. Samsung and TSMC are other big names in this industry. Perhaps the biggest two. The likes of Qualcomm, MediaTek, and AMD, all design their own chips but outsource the actual manufacturing to Samsung or TSMC. Intel didn’t manufacture chips for others until this chip shortage problem arose. It has now opened its plants to outside customers as well.

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, demand for electronic products has surged, and so has the demand for semiconductor chips. The demand has grown so high that it’s outpacing the limited supply, thus causing a global semiconductor chip shortage.

This chip shortage has affected the electronics and automotive industry alike. To address shortages at US car plants, Intel recently announced a $20 billion plan to expand its production capacity. The company is setting up two factories in Arizona.

Further, Intel is planning to expand to other locations in the US as well as Europe. This could allow it to better compete with Samsung and TSMC, the two dominating forces in the semiconductor manufacturing business. Of course, the latter two are expanding their respective manufacturing capacities as well. It now remains to be seen whether these combined efforts could resolve the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage sooner.

Samsung May Introduce New Virtual Assistant Called 'Sam'

Samsung virtual assistant Sam

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to unveil its new virtual assistant, Sam. The virtual assistant may return in the form of a 3-dimensional character.

The South Korean tech giant’s official virtual assistant character was originally launched in a 2D form. The newly surfaced 3D variant of the virtual assistant looks quite nice, it will probably make you forget about Bixby.

Despite having a 2D version, the character underwent a radical overhaul to return to social media. Samsung’s virtual assistant, Sam, has more expressions, poses, and textures. These additional features make it more interesting and modern.

Lightfarm Studios gave Sam an awe-inspiring facelift

Lightfarm Studios has published a slew of photos and renders of Sam. This gives us a clearer view of Samsung’s virtual assistant, Sam.

The visual arts production house released a statement to divulge more details about Sam’s design. It teamed up with Cheil Agency to develop more realistic character design materials.

As a result of this collaboration, Sam’s hair and clothes look more realistic. Moreover, her overall aesthetic look is even more attractive, as pointed out by Duniaku. The site released a list of the complete team that is working on the project.

Lightfarm also revealed the applications they used to create Samsung’s new virtual assistant, Sam. They used software like Adobe After Effects, SideFX Houdini, Adobe Photoshop, Marvelous Designer, and Blender 3D.

The complete team working on the project

The project is directed by Rafael Vallaperde, while Giselle Almeida serves as the Art Director. Gustavo Rodrigues is the CGI Coordinator, while Mayara Sampaio and Jhonatan Lechar are working on the project as 2D artists.

The 3D artist team includes Ramon Lima, Lucas Falcão, Jhonatan Lechar, and Weslley Nereu. Moreover, Ramon Lima and Rafael Coppola are simulation artists in the project.

Samsung virtual assistant Sam 1

Lucas Falcão, and Jose Mauro Lobão have done the grooming, while Viviane Rodrigues, and Weslley Nereu are working as animators.

Marcéu Lobo handled post-production, and Mariana Gomes served as the producer and Bárbara Galvão as the sales manager.

Samsung’s virtual assistant Sam in action

In addition to the renders, the multi-award-winning visual arts production house released a test clip of the new assistant in action. The clip, which was shared on Vimeo, seems to have been taken down.

This could be an indication that Lightfarm may have created the Samsung Sam character of their own volition. It is highly unlikely that it may be based on an actual announcement from the company, according to Unbox.

It is also worth mentioning here that Lightfarm has acknowledged its collaboration with Cheil Agency for the project. For those unaware, Cheil Agency is an ad firm under the Samsung group.

So, there is a possibility that the company could announce Sam as an official character soon.

Motorola Moto G Stylus With 5G Is Coming To The US

Motorola M logo DG AH 2020

The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G has been subject to all sorts of speculations and leaks. The device has been floating around the rumor mill for quite some time.

Motorola announced the Moto G Stylus phone in 2021, along with another device dubbed the Moto G Stylus 5G. Earlier this month, a press render of the 5G-ready handset surfaced online.

The render was originally shared by TechnikNews’ Nils Ahrensmeier on May 31 on Twitter. It shows the phone from all angles and reveals it will have a hole in the left corner of its display.

Moto G Stylus 5G alleged specs & features

Ahrensmeier divulged some key details about the Moto G Stylus 5G US version in his tweet. The leaked phone seems to have a thicker chin, but the side bezels are quite slim.

Motorola didn’t adopt the same design which the company used for the model launched earlier.

A pill-shaped LED is placed horizontally below the protruding camera module. The company’s trademark batwing logo is placed in the middle, and there is a possibility that it houses a fingerprint scanner beneath it.

The bottom features an audio jack, a USB-C port, a speaker grille as well as the silo for the stylus. The top of the phone is bare.

Moto G Stylus 5G headed to the US

The first Moto G Stylus has announced with 4G Snapdragon 678 SoC back in January. A slew of leaked renders surfaced on the web ahead of the official launch, revealing an entirely different design of the rear-mounted camera setup.

Several months later, that mystery has finally been solved. It turned out that the leaked device was actually a 5G-enabled Moto G Stylus (2021) model. While it hasn’t been announced yet, GSMArena has revealed that it will go up for sale in the United States.

The site has come to this conclusion based on a newly surfaced leak. More renders of the phone have also been spotted.

Moto G Stylus 5G US 1

As can be seen in the renders, the quad rear cameras are arranged differently in the 5G variant than the 4G model. It is still unclear if actual sensors will be identical to the cameras of the 4G Stylus or different.

Moto G Stylus 5G US 2

It isn’t surprising that the chipset has been replaced with the one that supports 5G. Details about the new SoC are still scarce.

Moreover, the Moto G Stylus 5G will offer a hefty 256GB of onboard storage. This is double the amount in the Moto G Stylus 4G model.

Galaxy S21 June Update Rolling Out Widely, Fixes Camera Lag Issues

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra AH 11

Samsung started rolling out the June 2021 Android security patch to the Galaxy S21 series last week. The update was initially released in the company’s home country South Korea. Now, according to SamMobile, international variants of the phone are picking up the new update as well. As of this writing, the update is rolling out for the Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra in the UAE. It should reach many other markets over the course of this week.

When the June security update started rolling out for the Galaxy S21 series in South Korea last week, it was unclear if it brings anything else apart from the latest security fixes. But, it turns out, the latest update is quite an important one. No, not because it fixes any major security vulnerability. In fact, we don’t even know what security vulnerabilities have been fixed with this month’s patch. Google has yet to publish the new security bulletin.

Instead, the June update contains a fix for the lag issues in the Galaxy S21 phones’ camera app. Over the past few weeks, many users have reported experiencing crazy stutter and lag with the Galaxy S21 camera. Zooming in/out or switching the lenses would take an enormous amount of time, enough to miss out on that perfect moment you wanted to capture. The latest update now fixes that, Samsung claims.

Galaxy S21 June security update fixes camera lag issues

According to the official statement, put on the Samsung Members community forums by a moderator, the issues occur when there is “insufficient memory or computational resources in a specific path including portrait mode”. But it’s not limited to portrait mode as users reported seeing similar issues in landscape mode as well.

Either way, the June security update should fix it. What remains to be seen is whether the issues are completely gone or there’s still some stutter or lag. It should be clear once more people install the new firmware.

The June 2021 Android security patch for the Galaxy S21 series is rolling out internationally with firmware version G99xBXXU3AUE8. As said before, it’s currently available over the air (OTA) to users in the UAE. However, it should now be only a matter of time before the update hits the Galaxy S21 phones in other regions as well.

If you own either of the Galaxy S21, S21+, or S21 Ultra, you should receive a notification to download the new OTA update in the coming days. You can also manually check for updates from your phone’s Settings app. If you were experiencing those camera lags on your Galaxy S21, you can tell us if the new update fixes them in the comments section below.

Oyster Sauce Company Lee Kum Kee Threatened After Ancestral Grave Was Damaged

Mark Twain once said that “Truth is stranger than fiction“. For those of us living peaceful lives, this is usually untrue. However, there are often occasions which feel as though they were derived from a story. This is one of them.

If you cook, you’ll most likely recognise the Hong Kong brand Lee Kum Kee (李锦记). It is well known for its oyster sauce which is a staple household ingredient. Recently, the company was threatened with a mysterious note and some damaged graves.

Source: Apple Daily

The Lee Kum Kee company was founded by Lee Kum Sheung (李锦裳) after he supposedly invented oyster sauce by accident. Since then, the company has been kept within the family and has been handed down from generation to generation. However, early last month (May), the ancestral grave was disturbed. According to a note left behind, the desecration was due to the company.

The Lee family cemetery is located in Ha Fan Shan (下花山). Every year, the family and staff will travel up the mountain to visit the graves. Founder Lee Kum Sheung and his wife, along with the second generation of the family are buried there. This year, the family paid an emergency visit to the site after villagers reported it had been disturbed.

Source: China Press

According to the villagers, they discovered the tomb had been damaged and the coffins were open. Additionally, two skulls had been placed provocatively in front of the grave. The skulls were found in front of the grave belonging to the second generation owner Lee Shiu Nan and his wife. As such, villagers assumed the skulls belonged to them. A note was also found accusing the company’s boss of being unscrupulous and “bullying the honest people“. “Why pretend to be deaf?” it asked. It promised karma and justice, with the ominous phrase “Blood for blood“. Additionally, the note alluded to further acts as it ended with “a good show to follow up“.

The villagers quickly reported the matter to the Lee family. The following day, the family members arrived to asses the damages themselves. Apparently, they could not find the skulls as they later asked the villagers about their whereabouts. Although several villagers volunteered to help hunt for them, the skulls could not be found. Some villagers asked the family about the disturbance to the grave, however, the Lee family stated it was a private matter.

Source: China Press

The tomb has since been repaired but its damages can still be seen if one looks hard enough. According to China Press, there has been no word from the Lee family about the matter. It is believed they are keeping the incident hushed up. China Press also stated the police have not been informed about the incident.

Samsung Galaxy Note Series Could Make A Comeback Next Year

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Review AM AH 29 1

The Samsung Galaxy Note series could make a comeback next year. As most of you know, Samsung decided not to release a Galaxy Note handset this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to come as a replacement, kind of.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will ship with an S Pen stylus. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra did not ship with one, but it does support it. Samsung is allegedly planning to announce several other devices with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in August, to fill the Galaxy Note series void.

The Galaxy Note series may make a comeback in 2022

That being said, the company didn’t give up on the Galaxy Note series entirely, it seems. We’ve seen reports before that the Galaxy Note series could make a comeback. Well, a tipster now says that it could happen in 2022.

According to Tron, Samsung is discussing the comeback of the Galaxy Note next year. Why? Well, because the Galaxy S21 Ultra sales allegedly did not meet Samsung’s sales expectations, despite the fact it supports a stylus.

Do take this information with a grain of salt. We’re not sure if there’s any truth to this. It’s a bit early for such discussions over at Samsung, as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is supposed to be the main replacement for the Galaxy Note. The Galaxy S21 Ultra does support the S Pen, but it doesn’t ship with one.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 won’t include a slot to dock the S Pen like the Galaxy Note phones

What’s more, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 won’t exactly have a slot for docking the S Pen, like the Galaxy Note phones do. It will also ship with a specialized S Pen, as the company wants to avoid damaging the phone’s display.

It all points to the fact that Samsung may have scrapped the Galaxy Note series a bit early. Samsung may have opted to experiment this year, to see the reactions, and the demand. Depending on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 3 sales, the Galaxy Note may make a comeback next year.

Over 2 Million Android Users Are Now Using Clubhouse

clubhouse android app

According to the company’s announcement, Clubhouse has reached over 2 million active users on Android.

To examine how incredible this is, notice that the official release of Clubhouse Android app happened just weeks ago. Reaching this number of Android users in such a short period of time shows that the Clubhouse has been able to meet the needs of its users very well.

The company had a town hall in its app yesterday, and they announced future updates are on the way to improve app functionality. Of course, the iOS app is still leading, and the Android app needs a few months to take it over. The coming updates will focus on discovery and notifications. Also, other minor improvements are on the way.

Clubhouse removes the invitation-only sign-up

Currently, you need an invitation from a friend to sign-up in Clubhouse. With the growth of users and the expansion of infrastructure, using invitation-only method is no longer practical. Also, it hinders app development.

If you do not have a friend to receive the Clubhouse invitation from, do not worry. Clubhouse registration is open to the public this summer. This means everyone can easily register in the app without an invitation.

The invitation-only method may be a good strategy for stocking interests at a service and instilling the FOMO (Fear of missing out) as a marketing strategy. But this can not be continued forever, and the app should welcome all users by open signing up.

Clubhouse position as a leading audio chat app is in danger

When you are a successful and innovative service that can attract more than 2 million users in just a few weeks, you can not expect Big Tech to forget you. Currently, many companies are working on their Clubhouse competitors. However, some of them, like Telegram and Twitter, have successfully launched their own features and constantly improve them.

Facebook, Microsoft, Spotify, and even Reddit are on the way to develop a similar service to Clubhouse. The future of audio chat apps is quite interesting.

Of course, this rapid growth has also created risks for the Clubhouse and its user data. It was in April that some sources reported that hackers have access to the 1.3 Million clubhouse users personal data.

HONOR 50 Series Coming On June 16, Including A Flagship With SD888

HONOR 50 teaser

The HONOR 50 series smartphones will become official on June 16. The company announced the information via Weibo (a Chinese social media network), while its media people are spreading the word as well.

Three HONOR 50 smartphones will launch on June 16, including a flagship one

Now, based on the information that leaked thus far, HONOR is planning to announce three devices during that event. The HONOR 50 will be joined by the HONOR 50 Pro, and 50 Pro+.

The HONOR 50 is expected to ship with the Snapdragon 778G SoC. It will, essentially, be a mid-range smartphone. We’re not sure about the HONOR 50 Pro, but the 50 Pro+ is said to include the Snapdragon 888 SoC.

Considering the ‘Pro’ moniker, the HONOR 50 Pro could also ship with Qualcomm’s most powerful processor. We’ll have to wait and see. All in all, we’re getting three smartphones, though, and considering the differences between them, there will be something for everyone.

The HONOR 50 Pro+ specs did surface recently. According to that information, the device will feature a 6.79-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. We’re not sure if that will be an LTPO display, though.

The Pro+ model will include 66W wired, and 50W wireless charging

The phone is also said to include 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 128GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage. A 4,400mAh battery was also mentioned. The phone will support 66W fast wired charging, and 50W fast wireless charging.

Four cameras are expected to be included on the back of this phone, and two on the front. A 50-megapixel main camera is said to be partnered with a 13-megapixel ultra-wide unit. An 8-megapixel telephoto camera was also mentioned, as was a 3D ToF (Time-of-Flight) camera.

On the front, the HONOR 50 Pro+ is expected to feature 32 and 8-megapixel cameras. Based on this info, the phone will likely feature a pill-shaped camera display hole on the front.

Android 11 is expected to come pre-installed on all devices, along with Google services. HONOR is no longer Huawei’s company, and it was confirmed a while back that it will feature Google apps / services.

Do note that this press event got teased in China, but these devices will make their way to other markets as well.

Google Claims It Will Not Build Privacy Sandbox Backdoors

Google App DG AH 2020

Google has assured advertisers that it will not build Privacy Sandbox backdoors. On Thursday, the search engine giant promised that it won’t come up with separate rules for itself.

Meanwhile, the company continues to force data privacy restrictions on those navigating the complete removal of third-party cookies in the Google Chrome browser. This is an attempt to subdue concerns surrounding Google’s efforts to eliminate third-party cookies from the internet.

The entire process has been led by the company’s controversial FLoC initiative. The changes are expected to be introduced next year, according to Engadget.

Google recently assured apprehensive advertisers that it will be duty-bound to the same technique it is imposing on others.

Google explains how it will be using this Privacy Sandbox

VP and GM of Ads at Google, Jerry Dischler spoke about the company’s open-source Privacy Sandbox development effort on Thursday in a virtual marketing event. These methods include an automated targeting technique that has triggered privacy-related concerns.

Moreover, these methods even led to an antitrust investigation by the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority. Ad tech companies and other leading industry players believe Google will not adopt the same techniques it is forcing others in the industry to use.

Ad tech firms believe this technique will limit data use, targeting, and measurement capabilities, according to DigiDay. However, Dischler clarified that the firm will be using these APIs for its own ads and measurement products. He said the company will not build backdoors for itself.

Advertisers are still skeptical

Even if the company does not open a proverbial backdoor for itself, it is worth noting that it still owns the house.

Once third-party cookies stop working in Chrome browser, Google plans to allow itself to obtain and use individual-level data from its owned-and-operated properties. However, it has neither confirmed nor denied whether it considers Chrome as its owned-and-operated property.

VP of enterprise partnerships at Goodway Group, Amanda Martin points out that the issue isn’t about defining it as a backdoor. Instead, it is about defining what the firm considers as owned and operated and their first-party data.

Aside from that, Martin said it is important to understand what advertisers consider owned and operated and their first-party data. “Google’s ecosystem gets really gray because of all the pieces they own,” she explained.

According to digital ad consultant and Ad Bacon founder, Ty Martin, Google might change its mind in the future. Martin pointed out that Google is under continual pressure to deliver better results.

This might force the company to explore opportunities that up until now have been considered off-limits.

Another day, another US carrier is ticking off an Android device from the Android 11 update list. Notably, US carrier Sprint is rolling out the Android 11 One UI 3.1 update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6.

Verizon was the first US carrier to update the Galaxy Tab S6 to Android 11 One UI 3.1. Now, the Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is getting the same treatment.

FYI, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is the company’s 2019 flagship tablet. It runs on the then-latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, which is coupled with 6/8 GB of RAM.

The tablet came with a 7,040 mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging. There is a 10.6-inch Super AMOLED display and a 13MP dual-camera setup at the rear.

Under the hood, the phone came with Android 9 Pie out of the box. So, this Android 11 One UI 3.1 update is the device, second major firmware update.

Talking about the update itself, it is an important one. Because One UI 3.1 brings a ton of improvements under its belt. Moreover, there are a lot of features that would enhance your user experience with Galaxy Tab S6.

New Documents Have Accused Google Of Obscuring Location Tracking

Google Logo 2019 AM AH 1

Google has faced new evidence by Arizona’s attorney general over tracking locations and collecting data. According to the newly-discovered documents, Google has deliberately made it difficult or even impossible for users to disable location tracking and collecting location-related data.

This means that even if users chose not to share their location data, Google continued to collect location information regardless of the users’ demands. Of course, this is not the whole story. According to leaked documents, Google has even tried to lure smartphone manufacturers that use Android.

Google asked them to continue collecting location data “through active misrepresentations and concealment, suppression, or omission of facts.” Google has done this in a way that even its engineers and senior executives, including the company’s senior product manager, wouldn’t understand how the whole process works.

According to Businessinsider, Google made it difficult for users to find privacy-related settings in the Android menus. The easy finding of privacy settings was a “problem” for Google. The company has not yet responded to the allegations.

Google secretly collects users’ location data

Google had previously tried to block the release of the documents with legal leverage. But Arizona’s attorney general released the documents according to the request of News Media Alliance and Digital Content Next companies.

Also, the documents state that Google has collected users’ location data through various methods such as Wi-Fi or third-party applications not affiliated with the company. In most cases, users had to turn on their device’s location or connect to Wi-Fi to use an application.

Even Google employees have realized that users are tired of occasional Google tracking, which can be a threat to the business and the company’s future.

The investigation started in 2020

Arizona’s attorney general started its investigation over Google’s tracking of Android users in 2020. According to the documents, Google has used this information to show targeted ads to users. Also, they made over $130 billion in 2019 from this way.

“Google is doing everything it can to spy on everyone it can, without providing any sort of notice to anyone.” Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich said in an interview with FOX Business.

This is not the first time Google has been accused of violating users’ privacy. The company faces numerous privacy cases in the United States and abroad. In the latest case, the German antitrust watchdog has accused Google of illegally collecting users’ data. Moreover, violation of competition rules is another charge of Google in Germany.

Samsung Exynos SoC With AMD GPU Coming Later This Year: Official

Samsung AMD SoC coming 2021

A Samsung Exynos SoC with AMD GPU will become official later this year. We knew that it’s happening, but we did not know when. Well, AMD did confirm that the partnership will come to fruition later this year.

AMD confirmed the news during its keynote at Computex 2021. The information comes directly from AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su. She confirmed that the upcoming Exynos SoC will include RDNA2 graphics.

Samsung Exynos SoC with AMD GPU is coming later this year with advanced features

We’re looking at a brand new GPU here, and this is the very first time AMD’s GPU will be included in mobile devices. This GPU will offer several advanced features, such as ray tracing and variable rate shading.

These features should offer higher fidelity graphics, and improved power efficiency. For those of you who are unaware, RDNA2 is AMD’s latest graphics architecture, so we’re not looking at obsolete tech here.

This graphics architecture is used in AMD’s 6000 series graphics cards, as well as the PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X and S.

AMD’s CEO said that AMD partnered up with Samsung in order to “accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market”. Now, it was said that this GPU will land later this year, but AMD did not specify when exactly will that happen.

The Galaxy S22 series could debut this new processor

You’re probably wondering what phone will debut such a GPU. Well, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 are coming with Qualcomm’s SoCs, that much is quite clear at this point. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will include the Snapdragon 888, while the Z Flip 3 will likely ship with the Snapdragon 870.

As far as we know, Samsung is not planning any additional flagships for 2021. So, it’s possible that Samsung will announce this Exynos SoC with an AMD GPU this year, but won’t include it in a phone until next year.

The Galaxy S22 series could be ideal to debut such a processor. So, the chip could be announced towards the end of 2021, and debuted in early 2022 by the Galaxy S22 series. Let’s hope this will further improve Samsung’s Exynos SoCs.

Shopee Customers Won’t Be Able To Choose Courier Services From 17th June Onwards

One of the reasons why shoppers prefer Shopee is the option to choose their preferred courier service when checking out.

However, it’s been reported that said option will no longer be available to Shopee customers starting from 17th June onwards. Instead, customers will be given the following 3 options – “Standard Delivery”, “Economy Delivery” and “Others”.

According to the e-commerce platform, this change is to improve logistic efficiency so that merchants can optimise their deliveries and also to minimise late shipments. Of course, many weren’t too thrilled at this announcement. “They should not remove that options as customers pay for it. Customers should get the best courier they want,” Facebook user Wan Wan commented.

As you can see from the image above, the standard delivery will be carried out by PosLaju, DHL, J&T Express, Ninja Van, City Link, TheLorry.com, or its own Shopee Express. The online buying site is also hoping more merchants will start relying on the more affordable Shopee Express option instead of other delivery services.

As many pointed out, the best option is still free shipping, no?

LG Stops Production Of Smartphones, Repurposes Facilities For Home Appliances

AH LG black and white logo

LG has officially stopped the production of smartphones. The company announced its exit from the smartphone business early last month but continued the production of some models to supply to carriers who had already placed orders for the phones. As of May 31st, the Korean firm has reportedly completed the delivery of those orders. It has now closed operations at its smartphone production facility in Vietnam and is in the process of converting it into a household appliance production line.

Since LG began winding down the smartphone business last month itself, the company has already transitioned some of the smartphone production capacity at its Vietnam factory to home appliances. This is to ensure that employees working in the smartphone sector don’t lose employment during this transition process. According to the Korean media, remaining workers from the smartphone lines will also soon move to other sectors.

Along with smartphones and home appliances, LG also makes TVs at its factory in the Haiphong city of Vietnam. Its sister firms LG Display and LG Innotek also run some production lines at this facility. However, it was the company’s largest smartphone production base until it decided to quit this industry altogether.

After quitting the smartphone business, LG is now focusing on the home appliances industry, which is evident from the fact that it is converting the facilities used for manufacturing smartphones into appliance production lines. The company is aiming to extend the lead over arch-rival Whirlpool in this industry.

According to the Korea Herald, the Korean firm overtook the US company in sales revenues in Q1 2021 for the first time in years. It is now reportedly on track to extend that lead in the second quarter as well. Industry experts believe LG has the potential to overtake Whirlpool in annual sales this year.

LG stops smartphone production but will continue to support existing models

LG last month said that it will wind down the smartphone business by July 31st, although it will continue to sell the existing inventory. The company will also continue to offer four years of after-sales support from the date of manufacture of the device. Remember, it’s not the date of purchase but the date of manufacture. So you might want to carefully look for the manufacturing date if you’re planning to get an LG phone.

Depending on the model, you might be eligible for up to three years of software updates as well. LG will provide three major Android OS update to its high-end phones such as LG Wing and LG Velvet. Some lower-cost models will get two iteration updates of Google’s operating system.

According to a report last month, three LG smartphone models will get updates up to Android 13 while six other phones will get updates up to Android 12. The company is currently rolling out the Android 11 update to its eligible phones.

Spider Solitaire Challenge Features Custom Decks Made With MIT, Encyclopedia Britannica

Spider Solitaire image 111

There are lots and lots of different versions of Solitaire, and they all featured in last year’s Solitaired, from entrepreneurial developers X and Y.

Now the team has decided to simplify. Spider Solitaire Challenge takes just one Solitaire variant and lets it shine on its own personal stage.

Chances are, the only version of Solitaire you’ve played is Klondike, the default game that came bundled with billions of copies of Microsoft Windows through the nineties and noughties.

Spider Solitaire is a much more interesting proposition, with a difficulty level that ranges from “fairly straightforward” to “mind-bogglingly impossible”. Here’s how it works.

You’re playing with two complete decks, which makes 104 cards in total. 54 of these cards are dealt at the outset, in ten random columns, with the top card in each column exposed. At any point you can deal another card, face up, onto each of these columns.

The goal is to rearrange these randomly shuffled cards into nice neat numerically ordered stacks, and this is a fairly simple task when there’s only one suit on the table.

Things take a turn when you add another suit. While it’s possible to place a card of any suit down on a card carrying the next ascending number, you can only move the resulting stack of cards if they also belong to the same suit.

This devilish twist forces you to be ultra-cautious about where you place your cards. The apparently safe haven of a red six might be tempting when you need somewhere to dump a black five, but that five can all too easily become an immovable obstacle that brings the whole machine grinding to a halt.

As well as being an excellent Solitaire variant, Spider Solitaire Challenge is an illuminating education resource. X and Y have partnered up with institutions like Encyclopedia Britannica, MIT, Who2 and others to create themed decks celebrating great human beings.

There’s a deck full of leading figures from the women’s suffrage movement, a deck showcasing heroes of the civil rights movement, a deck containing great inventors, a deck for notable women in computing, and more besides.

To check them out, play Spider Solitaire Challenge for free online or download it from the Google Play Store.

Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing Passed Away At Age 75

Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing has passed away at the age of 75. The multi-talented public figure was best known for founding the university that bears his name.

His death was confirmed today (1st June) by Lim’s aide. However, further details were not provided. Additionally, the cause of his death was not stated.

Source: Facebook

Last week, 25th May, it was reported that Lim had been hospitalised in Pantai Hospital Bangsar. Contrary to the rumours, it was not because of Covid-19. Instead, the university founder was recovering from a fall. A statement released then announced that Lim’s condition was stable and he was recovering.

Although many recognise him for the university he founded, that was not the only thing Lim did in life. He first started out as an illustrator and later ventured into advertising. Following that, he turned to education. He founded the Limkokwing Institute of Creative Technology in Malaysia in 1991. In 2002, it was the first private college to be recognised as a university college. The university gradually gained global recognition and started branching out to other countries as well.

Angelababy Still Married To Huang Xiaoming; Fans Believe Otherwise

Hong Kong artist Angelababy, real name Angela Yeung Wing (杨颖), and her husband Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明) have been married since 2015. Even though they have been together for about six years and have a child, fans are still hoping the two will divorce.

Recently, fans got excited when they spotted Angelababy hanging out with another male artist. Many thought this would be the end of the couple’s marriage. To their dismay, the couple and their friends shut the rumours down firmly.

On 31st May, Angelababy’s best friend posted a photo of herself and the artist chilling on a yacht. The photo attracted a lot of attention on Weibo, what with the pretty girls and picturesque sunset in the background. However, some sharp-eyed netizens spotted an anomaly in the photo.

They quickly pointed out that the mirror showed the reflection of a male artist. Many suspected it was artist Cai Xukun (蔡徐坤). Fans were quick to announce their speculations, with a few saying, “Someone’s house is about to collapse, and I heard that there’s a little fresh meat (Cai Xukun) who wants to help people raise a baby.”

The photo was quickly taken down, however the damage had been done. Netizens continued their guesses and speculations, until Angelababy’s friends rallied to shut down the rumours. “Keep Running” (aka “Running Man China”) and NCT member Lucas otherwise known as Huang Xuxi (黄旭熙), clarified matters on Weibo. “(Angelababy) brought us out to play!” Lucas said, referring to the “Keep Running” group. Cai also commented on the post, stating it was a team building exercise for the members.

This is not the first time netizens have interfered in Angelababy’s marital affairs. Earlier this year, fans revived a decade-old rumour after seeing Huang and his ex-girlfriend Li Fei’er (李菲儿) on the show “Sister Riding the Wind and Waves 2 (乘风破浪的姐姐)”. Previously, Li hinted that Angelababy had been the reason why Li and Huang had broken up. After seeing the two together on the show, fans started discussing the matter again. Huang and Angelababy both denied the allegation and he withdrew from the show.

Fans also speculated that the two would soon divorce as the couple was rarely seen together in public. Additionally, they also did not post any couple activities online. Although the couple has denied the divorce rumour several times, fans seem very keen on splitting the two apart.

Angela’s best friend later announced that she would avoid posting about Angela in the future. She explained that, as a good friend, she did not want to watch Angela be attacked by fans and their rumours. She hopes to lessen the impact these rumours bring to Angela’s daily life.

Angela and Huang may not publicly advertise their love for one another, but it doesn’t mean they are divorcing anytime soon. We wish the couple a happy life and hope fans can respect their marital affairs too.
