Google is a company that’s always working on something. A random and mysterious Google device just passed the FCC. There’s very little word on what this device, as spotted by Android Police, could possibly be.
The mysterious device is identified as a streaming device
Before a device reaches peoples’ hands, it has to pass certain stages along the way. One of those stages is getting clearance from the FCC. The information that the FCC provides varies from slightly useful to downright damning. Knowledge obtained from the FCC has spilled the beans on many devices in the past.
This device from Google has the model number GJQ9T. The information we were able to gain from this FCC listing was that this device is a wireless streaming device. One of the few things that come to mind is a new Chromecast device.
Google’s Chromecast has been a popular item in the streaming dongle market. Since the last Chromecast model was released last year, it seems off that the company would release a new version this year. If this is a Chromecast, then it might be an incremental upgrade.
This could be a Stadia product
On the subject of streaming, we can’t rule out something dealing with Stadia. This is the company’s entry into the cloud gaming market. With Stadia, whatever game you’re playing is rendered on Google’s cloud servers and streamed to a device. The service has had a rocky start, but Google is still pushing it.
Even though different devices can stream Stadia already, they all have different capabilities. If Google were to launch a standalone Stadia device, it could help make the experience more unified. A standalone device with the minimum specs required to stream Stadia games could be cheap to make and cheap to sell.
Google may have an entirely new product in the works
It’s easy to guess what this mysterious Google device is based on current and past devices, but the possibility of something completely new still remains. For all we know, Google could be entering a completely new market. There doesn’t seem to be any similar model numbers to GJQ9T, which could point to a new line of products.
Since the device is a wireless streaming device, we at least know its main function. For the time being, we’re going to be on the lookout for any new Google devices that pop up with the same model number. It’s exciting to think that we could possibly see something completely different from Google. As always, this should be taken with a grain of salt.
