Google Pixel 6 Pro / XL Preview: Release Date, Specs, Price & More – Updated August 2, 2021

New Pixel 6 Pro Leaked Renders 1

The Google Pixel 6 series is coming this year, and it will consist of two phones, it seems. The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have been mentioned via rumors and leaks. Do note there’s a chance the Pixel 6 Pro may be called the Pixel 6 XL, as Google did use that naming in the code, but nothing has bee confirmed just yet. Information regarding both phones has been surfacing for months now, and it really heated up in the last month or so. Well, in order to help you make sense of what leaked out, we’ve decided to create previews for both devices. You can check out the Google Pixel 6 preview here, while in this article, we’ll cover the Pixel 6 Pro.

These two smartphones will have a lot in common, if rumors and leaks are to be believed. They will have a lot in common in both design and spec domains, and the same goes for features. There will be some differences, though, of course. Neither of the two phones will be especially compact, which may disappoint some people. If you like larger phones, though, you’ll be right at home with both. Google is also planning a major design revamp with the Pixel 6 series, as most of you probably already know. In any case, let’s talk more about the Pixel 6 Pro, shall we.

This article will be regularly updated with new information on the Google Pixel 6 Pro (this is a preview article) — both official teasers and credible leaks, rumors, and insider claims — as it becomes available in the run-up to the release of the upcoming Android smartphone. The last update was made on August 2.

The Pixel 6 series will usher in new, interesting design

We know exactly what to expect when it comes to the Pixel 6 Pro design. The phone surfaced in CAD-based renders not long ago, and those renders were quite detailed. As you can see in the gallery provided below, the Pixel 6 Pro will look entirely different compared to the Pixel 5. Google seems to be stepping away from the understated design, and going with a more… well, bold design. This phone will look different compared to anything out in the market at the moment. It seems like Google will combine metal and glass in order to make this happen, and include a large camera bump on the back.

That camera bump is especially interesting. It stretches from the left side of the phone, all the way to the right edge, and it protrudes the whole way. It slowly raises from the edges towards the middle, as it’s curved towards the sides. The Pixel 6 Pro will include three camera sensors on the inside, along with an LED flash. It will offer one more camera than its smaller sibling. Google’s branding will be included on the back, and Google will combine several different colors here. The variant that surfaced is predominantly white, with black and orangey-red accents. A ‘green’ model will also be offered, and likely several other options.

The ‘Pro’ model will feature a curved display

The Google Pixel 6 Pro will also feature a curved display, and it will offer a boxy design. Its corners won’t be as curved as you’d expect, while the back side will be predominantly flat. It will curve a bit towards the sides, though. A display camera hole will be included, and it will be centered. All the physical buttons will sit on the right side. The power / lock button will sit above the volume up and down buttons, as we’re used to seeing from Google’s Pixel phones. A Type-C USB slot will be included at the bottom, next to the phone’s main speaker. The Pixel 6 Pro will be quite large, it will measure approximately 163.9 x 75.8 x 8.9mm (11.5mm with the camera bump), according to the leaked info.

Google is getting back into the premium segment with its upcoming flagships

The Google Pixel 6 Pro will be the larger of the two upcoming models, and its specs did surface. We’ve already mentioned its overall size in the previous section, and the phone’s display information also surfaced. The Pixel 6 Pro is expected to include a 6.71-inch QHD+ Plastic AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. That display will be curved, and it will include a display camera hole at the top. The bezels around its display will be relatively thin, as you can see. We’re not sure if it will be an LTPO panel, we’ll have to wait and see.

A fingerprint scanner will sit under this display, and it will likely be of an optical variety. The phone will also support facial scanning, though it will probably use its front-facing camera for that purpose. In other words, it won’t offer advanced facial scanning. This is definitely the model most people who like large phones will prefer, even though the Pixel 6 won’t be that much smaller.

The Pixel 6 Pro will ship with Google’s very first SoC

This phone is expected to include Google’s very first processor ever, the GS101 Whitechapel. This is probably its codename, though, so it’ll likely feature an entirely different name once it launches. That processor is allegedly co-developed with Samsung, and it will include an ARM GPU. The GPU that got spotted on the Google Issue Tracker is the Mali-G78. That is the same GPU that the Exynos-based Galaxy S21 series smartphones use. The Whitechapel processor will also include a new NPU and ISP, that Google will put in place.

It is said that this chip will be less powerful than the Snapdragon 888, but more powerful than the Snapdragon 865. In terms of sheer power, it should be somewhat similar to the Snapdragon 870, but we’ll see. The benefits of this SoC will likely be in the camera, real-world performance, and battery departments, though. Considering that this will be Google’s very own silicon, it will give the company a chance to optimize everything to the max. It will be able to adapt that chip especially for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

Android 12 will come pre-installed, while the phone will include a 5,000mAh battery

Ultra-wideband (UWB) tech will also be included in the package, it seems. It will be used to boost location features on the device. Android 12 will play a part in that, of course. Needless to say, Android 12 will come pre-installed on the device. In regards to the phone’s battery, the Pixel 6 Pro is expected to include a 5,000mAh unit. It will also support fast charging, and likely fast wireless charging. We still don’t have any information on that, though. The phone will include 12GB of RAM, but it will be available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options.

A new camera sensor is finally coming

Camera performance was always one of the main selling points of Google’s Pixel phones. The thing is, Google has been using the same main camera sensor since the Pixel 2. That handset got announced in Q4 2017, so Google has been at it for three and a half years. Despite the fact that camera sensor still performs really well in combination with Google’s software, it’s starting to show its age, and it’s time for a refresh. Several sources reported that the Pixel 6 series will offer a new main camera sensor. Both the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will likely use the same one.

Google will utilize either Samsung’s or Sony’s camera sensor

One report suggested that Google plans to use Samsung’s camera sensor. Some references to that an ISOCELL camera were found in the code. If that ends up happening, Google may reach for a 50-megapixel unit, the ISOCELL GN2 camera. That is a 1/1.12-inch sensor, and it offers a 1.4um pixel size. Based on its hardware specs, it would fit in well with Google’s software, based on the type of sensor Google is using at the moment. Other reports tipped Sony’s 50-megapixel camera to be included on the back. Regardless of what ends up happening, a new camera sensor is on the way.

The device will feature four cameras overall

In addition to the main camera, the Pixel 6 Pro will also include an ultra-wide camera on the back, and a periscope camera as well. No information got shared regarding those cameras, unfortunately. The phone’s front-facing camera, on the other hand, will allegedly be able to shoot 4K video. Based on the latest leak, A 50-megapixel wide-angle camera will be backed by a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. That telephoto camera could include 5x “ultra tele” zoom. A 12-megapixel selfie camera will also be included. A selfie flash was also tipped in one of the latest reports.

One of the recent rumors mentioned a “gimbal-like steady cam mode” will be a part of the offering on the device. ‘Big improvements in video” have also been teased by that very same source.

A new wireless charger is coming

According to a recent report, Google actually plans to announce a new wireless charger alongside its flagship handsets. This wireless charger will, allegedly, have three different fan speeds. That suggests higher charging speeds. Chances are this will be a wireless charging stand, but we’re only guessing, it remains to be seen. The Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will both likely support wireless charging.

Now, those of you who would like to take a look at some leaked third-party cases, check out the gallery below. These cases surfaced recently, and they do show some solutions for rear camera protection. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro have rather odd camera bumps on the back, and it will be interesting to see different approaches to protection that camera bump. Google’s official cases haven’t surfaced yet.

September 30 is the possible launch date for the Pixel 6 series

When can we expect the Pixel 6 Pro to arrive? Well, it will launch alongside the regular Pixel 6, that’s for sure. Both devices may arrive on September 30, alongside the Pixel Watch, Google’s first smartwatch. Google mentioned September 30 during Google I/O, as that date was used in the company’s promo materials for Android 12. Android 12 will likely launch in August, though, way before the Pixel 6 series arrives. The Pixel 6 smartphones will be the first phones to ship with this software, though. So… September 30 seems like a likely date for the launch of Google’s new flagships.

We still do not know how much will the Pixel 6 Pro cost, the same goes for its sibling. What has been said, though, is that the Pixel 6 series will have an enormous marketing budget. According to a tipster, the Pixel 6 marketing budget will rival that of the Galaxy S series smartphones. We all know that Samsung invests a lot of money marketing its Galaxy S series, so… it seems like Google is finally aiming to intensively promote its new flagships.
