In a new development, Google is taking what seems to be a necessary step to end sign-in support for its app on devices running Android OS version 2.3.7 or lower.

According to Bleeping Computer, this step taken by Google will come into effect starting September 27. After that, Google will block logins on its native apps, so devices running Android 2.3.7 or lower won’t be able to use them.

This step has been taken by Google to keep its user’s data safe. Those who are still using such older Android phones will receive a username or password error when trying to sign in to any of the Google apps such as Gmail, YouTube, Maps after the said date.

Although the number of users running Android 2.3.7 or lower version is fewer, the numbers still count. Google is recommending Android OS users to upgrade their device to Android 3.0 or above to keep their data safe and have access to all the Google services.

However, there is a catch. Even after users using devices running Android 2.3.7 or lower will not be able to use any of the Google services or apps after September 27, they still can continue to access some of the services using their favorite web browsers.

Factory resetting on devices running Android 2.3.7 or lower will also be no longer possible

Google has also mentioned a list of actions that the devices running Android 2.3.7 or lower won’t be able to perform after the sign-in support ends on September 27.

Notably, devices cannot perform a factory reset and change the Google account password on a particular device or another device, that signs out you from everywhere else.

Moreover, users cannot remove their Google account from the device or re-add it. Additionally, you won’t be able to create a new Google account on the device.

All these actions are important ones. So, it only makes sense to throw the older phone and grab the latest one, or at least upgrade the Android version to 3.0 or above.

As already mentioned, since the number of users running Android 2.3.7 or lower is minuscule, the change won’t affect a lot of users. Google’s Android distribution numbers claim there are less than 1% of active devices running Android versions older than Jelly Bean.

If you have an Android device and don’t know which version you are running, you can navigate to Settings > System > Advanced > System update. Here you can see the Android version and security patch level.
