Sony Just Bought A Game Studio That Specializes In PC Releases

Yesterday Sony’s PlayStation division officially announced the acquisition of Returnal’s Housemarque, and today it’s announcing the acquisition of Nixxes Software. It also, though it hasn’t been confirmed yet, may be preparing to acquire Bluepoint Games, the team behind the release of the Demon’s Souls remake on PS5.

While all of these are particularly exciting for PlayStation and its fans, the Nixxes Software purchase stands out. And it should be grabbing the attention of those who play games on PC. That’s because Nixxes Software specializes in the releases of PC games.

Sony’s Nixxes Software purchase could lead to more PlayStation titles on PC

Sony hasn’t confirmed confirmed any reasons for the Nixxes acquisition, but perhaps the writing is on the wall.

Nixxes Software has worked on numerous projects over the years, but most or all of those projects have been work on the PC versions of AAA titles. Curiously, all of the ones listed on Nixxes’ website have been Square Enix titles. The studio’s most recent project was working with Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics on the PC release of Marvel’s Avengers.

In addition, it worked on the PC releases of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, as well as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. What does this mean for the future of PlayStation? Hard to say at the moment. But given Nixxes Software’s track record, it’s possible that Sony could be bringing the studio on board to handle future PlayStation PC ports.

This isn’t confirmed of course. But it seems like a plausible enough scenario when you consider the work that Nixxes has already done.

Could Sony be planning to increase PlayStation PC ports?

This would seem to be the most reasonable explanation for Sony’s purchase of the studio. It is entirely possible that Sony could have other plans for Nixxes. But it makes the most sense to keep Nixxes doing what it seems to be exceptionally good at. Working with studios on releases for the PC platform.

Sony has already released a number of its exclusive PlayStation titles onto PC. Including Days Gone which was the most recent title. And now with Nixxes joining the team it seems to have more help bringing some of its best games to more players.
