Samsung May Return To Vapor Chambers For Its Phones

Recently, OEMs have dropped vapor chambers from their phones, including Samsung. According to Digitimes, Samsung might be returning to vapor chamber coolers in its phones. The report says that this could happen as soon as next year.

The vapor chamber cooler market has seen a decline in the past year

The vapor chamber cooler market is just another victim of the global Coronavirus pandemic. The global chip shortage has slowed down the 5G chip market. This caused smartphone OEMs to abandon using vapor chamber technology in their phones.

This caused a sharp decline in the revenue that vapor chamber manufacturers got from smartphone sales. The report states that companies like Nidec Chaun-Choung Technology are getting only 7% of their income from smartphones. Auras’ smartphone sales dropped down to a paltry 4%.

Companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi were early to jump on the vaper chamber cooler train. Now, it seems that Samsung might be gearing up to make phones with the vapor coolers again. It’s reportedly contacted a handful of Taiwanese vendors to supply the coolers for it’s 2022 phones. Since this is all so early, you will have to take this with a grain of salt.

What are vapor chambers, and how could they help smartphone performance?

Vapor chambers are a means of cooling the processor when it gets hot. When a device is in use (especially heavy use) the processor can generate a lot of heat. When the processor gets really hot, the device will lower the performance to help cool it off. This is called performance throttling.

In order to avoid having to do this, companies put vaper chambers in their devices. This is a hollow piece of metal that sits on the processor. It has a bit of fluid inside of it. When the phone heats up, the fluid evaporates.

The process of evaporation steals heat energy away from the processor. This leads to an overall decrease in temperature compared to a device that doesn’t have any sort of cooling method. This is a method that’s also employed with PCs, only on a much smaller scale.

Get ready for Samsung’s next Unpacked Event!

While vapor chambers might be coming for next year’s Samsung device, there’s still a lot of buzz surrounding this year’s devices. The rumors have it that Samsung will be hosting its next event on August 11th. We are expecting to see the unveiling of the new batch of foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. This means that it’s just over a month away, so be sure to mark your calendars!
