Today, CNN announced its new streaming service that will come out next year – CNN Plus or CNN+. Because apparently the plus sign denotes it as a streaming service, these days.
CNN did not give us a whole lot of details on what this streaming service is going to be, but we do know that it will not replace the existing CNN television network. It will instead be a compliment to it, similar to ESPN+.
Of course, AT&T didn’t have enough streaming services already, so here comes CNN+.
There’s no word on pricing yet
As mentioned, CNN’s press release for CNN Plus was actually very brief. And there’s still a whole lot of questions that need to be answered, like pricing. But CNN did say that it would not be offering an ad-supported model. Which makes it sound like there will be one option for users, and it’ll likely be similar in price to ESPN+ which is $5.99 per month.
CNN did mention that at launch, the service will feature between eight and twelve hours of live programming, daily. So it won’t be 24/7 like the news channel is currently. And it will also have “topical deep dives and lifestyle content from some of CNN’s most prominent talent, as well as several new faces.”
On the bright side, with CNN Plus on its way, the company is going to be hiring around 450 people over the next six to nine months. That includes everything from producers, to engineers to marketers and everything in between. With the addition of 8 to 12 hours of live coverage daily, CNN definitely needs to expand its workforce, and this is how they will do it.
It’s still not really clear why CNN Plus needs to exist, other than the fact that CNN wants to get millennials that don’t subscribe to cable TV. However, most of them don’t watch the news anyways, so they likely won’t get many from that demographic anyways. CNN Plus is said to launch in early 2022.
