Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Successor Will Have Major GPU Improvements

The much-awaited Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 successor is currently shaping up. It is expected to be a major upgrade.

Smartphone processors aren’t usually subject to the same kind of speculations and leaks that mobile devices are ahead of their launch. It is still unclear how the industry will look next year, but some recent rumors and an AMD confirmation hint at impending big breakthroughs.

Qualcomm is having a hard time meeting the demand for its Snapdragon 888 chip due to the global chip shortage. To combat the situation, the American chipmaker began launching the Snapdragon 860 and 778 and other similar products in recent months.

Qualcomm is working on a major Snapdragon 888 sequel

Despite its struggle in terms of meeting skyrocketing demand for the Snapdragon 888 processor, the company is working on its next major chipset. After the company acquired Nuvia earlier this year, it was clear that its new chipset will be developed for high-performance laptops, according to XDA Developers

It is unlikely that Qualcomm will announce products based on that design until next year. In the meantime, details about their next premium-tier chipset for mobile devices have surfaced online.

On June 4, tipster Evan Blass took to his Twitter account to reveal some details about SM8450, which is the presumed part number of the “next-gen premium system-on-chip.” It can be recalled that the part number of Snapdragon 888 was SM8350, so part number SM8450 could be its successor.

However, it is worth noting that Qualcomm is quite inconsistent in terms of its chip naming process. It is still unclear what SM8450 will be marketed as. But a list of key components revealed by Blass shows what to expect.

Alleged features of the successor

According to the details revealed in the tweet, SM8450 will integrate the company’s Snapdragon X65 5G modem-RF system. The Snapdragon X65 is the successor to the X60 modem, which is integrated into the Snapdragon 888.

The modem is built on a 4nm process like the AP. Phones built on the SoC can connect to mmWave or sub-6GHz 5G frequencies on non-standalone, or standalone 5G networks.

The CPU houses Qualcomm Kryo 780 cores built on Arm Cortex v9 technology. The Armv9 architecture was announced in 2021.

Cortex-A510, Cortex-A710, the Cortex-X2 are the first CPU designs with the new technology.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 successor could use these three CPU core designs in a 1 x 3 x 4 configuration. As far as GPU is concerned, it comes with Qualcomm’s Adreno 730. Regrettably, details about the GPU are still scarce.
