Google Now Let's You Know When To Trust A News Topic

The internet is home to a lot of information, and because of this, it’s home to a lot of misinformation. As a result, Google has devised a way to combat this. A new Google search feature will let you know when to believe search results. This news comes to us from a Google blog post.

This new Google search feature focuses on new topics

When a story is brand new, it’s really hard finding rock solid information about it. Before credible news outlets can publish their articles and videos, it’s possible for a wave of false information to wash over the search results. This is why it’s important to have some sort of intervening force that lets users know that the story is still developing.

This is where Google comes in. The company has just introduced its new Google search feature that helps users know if a story is able to be trusted. When the search results pop up for a fresh or rapidly growing news story, there will be a notice that pops up, telling the user, “It looks like these results are changing rapidly. If this topic is new, it can sometimes take time for results to be added by reliable sources.”

This is significant because in those early hours while the story is still developing, anyone can post anything about the story. This doesn’t only go for news articles, it can also involve social media posts, pictures and Youtube videos.

Google’s “About This Result Panel” gives additional information about sources you find

Another new Google search feature that helps fight misinformation is the About This Result panel. When you search up a topic, there’s a 3-dot button on the top right of each result. Tapping it brings up the panel. The panel gives you relevant information about the result and the source.

When the panel is pulled up, it will display the wikipedia information about the site. It’ll display a short snippet of the Wikipedia entry and a link to the full page. If it doesn’t have a Wikipedia page, then that info is skipped.

Next, the panel will show how long ago the page was indexed by Google. This gives you an idea of how old the site is, making it easier to know if you should trust that site. under that, it will let you know if your connection to that site is secure.

Google hopes that these new feature will slow the spread of misinformation throughout the web. This is especially critical nowadays, as the Coronavirus is still a major issue in the world. Proper information has never been more crucial in this day and age.
