With the expected launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 at Samsungs Unpacked event on August 2, the hype is building up among Samsung fans. However, with just a few weeks till the event, Samsung has unveiled a new Galaxy-branded device in their home country of South Korea. The latest device is dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Wide and features mid-range specs.
The Samsung Galaxy Wide comes with a 5.5-inch TFT display and is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 410 system on chip clocked at 1.2GHz. The phone is equipped with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 128 GB via a microSD card slot. As for optics, the Galaxy Wide sports a 13-megapixel camera on the back with auto-focus and flash, while the front sports a 5-megapixel shooter. According to Samsung, the device packs a 3000mAh battery which is supposed to provide up to 12 hours of video playback time, 78 hours of audio playback time and up to 21 hours of continuous talk time on a 3G network. As far as its software is concerned, the Galaxy Wide will run on the latest build Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, skinned with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. For connectivity options, the Galaxy Wide comes with 4G LTE with support for Bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 17. It also comes with the usual connectivity options such as GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth v4.1 and support for NFC. However, what is interesting about the connectivity options offered by the device is the inclusion of a T-DMB chip which can be used for tuning in to digital broadcasts in the region.
It is believed that the Galaxy Wide is a re-branded and improved version of the Samsung Galaxy On7 which was launched in October last year. The Galaxy Wide carries the model number SM-G600S which is almost identical to the one found on the Galaxy On7, the only difference in the number being the added ‘S’ in the model number of the Galaxy Wide. Availability of the Samsung Galaxy Wide is currently limited to South Korea, and the device will be priced at 319,000 Korean Won ($276) once it hits shelves in a couple of weeks time. It is not known whether Samsung’s latest device will be released to other markets just yet.
