Having been in beta since January, this month Reddit released its official Android app. Long regarded as the front page of the internet; Reddit: The Official App is the first time Reddit has produced its own in-house app, immediately setting it aside from similar third party experiences, including Alien Blue that Reddit purchased just a couple of years ago. It’s surprising that Reddit waited this long to produce its own mobile app, so we were excited to try it out for April’s App of the Month!
If you’ve never used Reddit, think of it as a social networking and news site. Registered members of the Reddit community can submit content, such as text posts or direct links. Content falls under categories including ‘controversial’, ‘hot’ and ‘new’ with popular topics including sport and entertainment. You can get involved by leaving comments, posting things you find interesting and upvoting things you like or downvoting things you don’t.
The best part of Reddit is that whether you’re a movie buff, baking fanatic or into space travel, you don’t need to spend hours scouring the Internet for interesting content. Instead you let the Reddit community curate the funnest, most interesting and relevant news for you.
The Android app offers the core Reddit functionalities that users would expect, with key categories allowing you to submit content or just get stuck into conversation on your favourite topics, whether it’s space, data and analytics or animals doing funny things (a personal favourite).
The interface is easy to navigate and significantly more streamlined than the website, enhancing the overall user experience. The night mode offers a dark theme, with other customisation options allowing you to change how content is displayed, more specifically in a compact or card view.
Speaking about the new app in a recent promo video, Reddit’s Mobile Product Manager Ashley Higgins said “As we move throughout the year and beyond, the expectation is that the app will get bigger and better with every single step,”
It’s quite clear to see that there are many more opportunities for the Reddit app, but the team have covered off the basics in this first edition and the hope is that we see tailored features, especially around different topics, AMAs, etc. that can further expand and improve the user experience.
