Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Lacks USB Type-C for 3 Main Reasons

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is one of this year’s most anticipated smartphones, and its official announcement at Mobile World Congress 2016 revealed a ton of new features to be excited about, including a powerful camera boasting advanced autofocus techniques. However, one of the expected features missing from the new flagship phone is a reversible USB Type-C connector, which should eventually replace the all so familiar micro-USB port. One of the Galaxy S7’s main rivals from Korea, the LG G5, does have a USB Type-C port, so why is it that Samsung’s latest premium handset does not? Well, apparently there are a few reasons for this, three of which have been detailed by Shoneel Kolhatkar in a recent interview.

USB Type-C is one of the most anticipated changes in the world of Android. Although the majority of smartphones today feature a non-reversible micro-USB port, Type-C will eventually succeed the current standard, and a handful of smartphone makers so far – including LG with the new G5 as well as OnePlus with the OnePlus 2 and also last year’s Nexus devices – have actually already adopted the new port in their latest flagships. According to Samsung’s Senior Director of Product Marketing, Shoneel Kolhatkar, there are a handful of good reasons why his company stuck with a micro-USB port for the Samsung Galax S7, as opposed to making the leap to USB Type-C. One of these reasons is because of the Samsung Gear VR, which connects with the company’s premium devices through a micro-USB port. The Gear VR is a fairly new product and according to Kolhatkar, Samsung wanted “to make sure people who bought the headset six months ago aren’t disappointed”.

Another reason behind Samsung’s decision is that, as exciting as USB Type-C may be, the market is not yet ready to adopt it, according to Kolhatkar. There are simply too many devices and accessories on the market which connect through micro-USB, so in other words, Samsung doesn’t want to take the role of an early adopter. Last but not least, Kolhatkar pointed out that one of the main benefits of USB Type-C is fast charging, and added that fast charging capabilities have already been implemented on the Samsung Galaxy S7, as well as the Galaxy S6, despite their use of micro-USB ports.

Will Samsung make the switch to USB Type-C eventually? Most likely, but for now, Samsung doesn’t think they should “force” USB Type-C on the Galaxy S7 “and have consumers run out and buy adapters and chargers”. Perhaps the Korean tech giant will make the jump to USB Type-C with the Samsung Galaxy S8, but in light of these three reasons above, this decision seems to also depend on how many other smartphone makers will adopt Type-C by 2017.
