Sony acquires Altair Semiconductor for $200m to boost IoT plans

Altair Semiconductor logoSony has acquired Altair Semiconductors, a developer of high performance, ultra-low power LTE chipsets for $200 million according to Israeli media. The company is one of the leading provider of single-mode LTE chips, which feature in Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Altair has already been supplying chips to Sony for a number of years and the news is likely to bolster Sony’s mobile division as it expands its reach to the IoT sector. The firm is based in Israel and employs around 200 engineers and software developers. The company has six offices around the world including four in Asia (China, Taiwan, Japan and India).

Sony Mobile regards the push into the realm of IoT and our strategies for diving into this market are critically important. There can be little doubt that the market for network-connected devices – of every shape, size and type – will explode at breakneck pace going forwards,” said Izumi Kawanishi, Sony Mobile’s EVP of Product Business Group recently.
