DevilCase Xperia Z5 Aluminium Bumper review

DevilCase Xperia Z5_6Regular readers of the blog will know that we have reviewed several DevilCase aluminium bumpers in the past. DevilCase create aluminium bumpers for a wide range of flagship smartphones (not just Sony Xperia models). Today we are looking at the Xperia Z5 DevilCase bumper and we’re happy to say it delivers the usual high standard that we have come to expect from the Taiwanese-based company.

DevilCase offers this Xperia Z5 bumper in various colours to suit all tastes including Rose Gold, Red, Champagne Gold, Silver, Black, Graphite Black and Green. We have the Silver version for review – all colours are currently available via Amazon.com for $56.99 and Amazon.co.uk for £36.99. Click through for our impressions.

Some of the key features of the DevilCase bumper are highlighted on the rear packaging including the high precision finish using a CNC milling machine, a perfectly customised fit and easy installation.

Inside the packaging, you will find the DevilCase aluminium bumper itself, a hex key and a number of spare bumper screws.

The hex (Allen) key is used to remove two screws that hold the bumper frame in place. As we’ve seen in the past, the holes are drilled perfectly, ensuring that tightening or removing the screws is a painless process.

The inside edges of the aluminium bumper is lined with rubber sponges to avoid scratching your Sony Xperia.

The tight fit of the Xperia Z5 bumper holds the handset securely in place with little risk of it slipping out. The bumper also feels good in the hand, adding extra grip around the edges.

The bumper does not intrude with the back design which means you can continue to show off the lovely colour of your Xperia Z5 without burying it in a case. The case also offers light protection in case of a small bump or drop.

There is ample room to use the power button fingerprint sensor. The cutout has been designed to ensure there should be no issues with placing your finger on the top or bottom of the button without the case getting in the way. DevilCase uses metallic buttons for the volume rocker and dedicated camera button. Normally, we tend not to like it when case manufacturers cover up buttons, but we had no issue with using these buttons in practice, offering a decent amount of travel and good feedback.

The left side has no cutouts. Despite the phone being surrounded in a metal frame, we had few issues with this interfering with mobile reception. We have heard of others that sometimes report losing signal as a result of these type of aluminium bumpers, but it is not something we have experienced.

The top of the handset includes enough room to use a large 3.5mm headphone socket.

Equally, the bottom of the bumper has a large enough cutout to access the micro USB port. There is also a hole for those that want to use a lanyard with their handset. Due to the depth of the frame, you would not be able to use the DevilCase bumper with the Sony USB Charging Dock.

Overall thoughts

DevilCase offer some of the best aluminium bumpers around for Sony Xperia models. The DevilCase Xperia Z5 bumper delivers the same premium finish and construction that we have come to expect from them. The bumper won’t appeal to all due to its price, but for those looking to complement their Xperia Z5 with an elegant frame that adds light protection without ruining the handset’s good looks, then you won’t go too wrong with DevilCase.
