Even budget travellers need creature comforts. If you’ve graduated from the backpacker academy, be a proud flashpacker. There’s no shame in travelling cheap and chic.
1. Dorm rooms fill you with a certain dread.
You can still stay in a hostel, but you’re not too keen about sharing dorm rooms anymore. You want a private room. Preferably with an ensuite toilet. In a boutique hostel that’s been featured on a list you read online.
2. You secretly want to retire your backpack.
Your 60L backpack still has many years of life to go, but you could be kinder to your back. Instead of collecting those embroidered patches of countries you’ve visited, you’d really rather put stickers on your four-wheelers (and might even find the whole thing too tacky – aren’t passport stamps enough?).

3. Your idea of personal space on a plane is a whole row to yourself.
Enough fellow passengers chat you up in pointless conversations you prefer to avoid. And you’ve had your fair share of waiting for your seatmates to wake up before you go to the loo. Guess what? You can now avail of the Extra Seat Option. If that’s too anti-social for your taste, you can pick your seat. Your bladder will thank you.
4. The $1 meal no longer has the same appeal.
There was a time when your bragging rights centred on how little you spent in a certain place. Those days are over. It’s no longer about spending the least but about getting the most value for what you spent. In fact, you now look at restaurant reviews before you go, though street food still has a special place in your heart.
5. You will take a redeye flight if and only if…
You can be as comfy as possible and actually get some shuteye. Enough of sleepless wandering (unless the purpose of your holiday is to catch up on sleep in another city). Get a seat in the Quiet Zone. Or a Premium Flatbed. You know you deserve it.
