Getting a brand new phone and opening the box is akin to a kid opening a present on Christmas or their birthday. It’s an exciting fare and you always want to find out just what’s in that box, especially when the box looks extra fancy. Google went to some lengths to make the Nexus 6p’s box a little more elegant than previous Nexus devices, and it makes opening the box even sweeter. Besides this Google sent us an official Nexus 6p case to go along with that graphite Nexus 6p, which comes with a nice fabric back that feels almost like fur. Last but not least is that shiny Project Fi SIM card we were sent, adding this phone to the short list of phones compatible with Project Fi.
We also go through initial setup, which in this case was a little more frustrating than it should have been. Google’s previous devices (and most devices running Android Lollipop and up) have the ability to use NFC transfer to move information from one device to another during the setup process, so you could always just tap the back of the old phone to the new one, put your password in and sit back while it finishes setup. Now you’ve got to wait for the phone to find the other one via Bluetooth discovery, a method that’s never reliable and ended up taking over 3 minutes to get the phones paired up, with some significant finagling of Bluetooth and settings that shouldn’t have to be done. Check out the video below and let us now what you think, and of course don’t forget to check out our full Nexus 6p review and Nexus 5x review as well!
