Samsung is believed to be prepping the launch of yet another series of devices by the end of this month, called Galaxy ON. The first couple of devices that will be made available in the market as part of the lineup has long been rumored to be the Galaxy ON5 and Galaxy ON7. Both devices are said to be manufactured in India as part of the government’s “Make in India” initiative that offers a number of tax concessions for setting up manufacturing in the country. While both devices will obviously be launched in India first and foremost, it is anybody’s guess as to whether they’ll eventually be launched in other markets or if they will remain India-exclusive.
A new report now claims that the ON5 will come with an MSRP of Rs. 10,000 ($150) in India, while the ON7 is expected to sport a price-tag of Rs. 13,000 ($195). It remains to be seen whether the ‘ON’ moniker stands for Online-Exclusive, as that seems to the buzzword for brands in India over the past couple of years, ever since Motorola made it trendy with its first generation Moto G handset. As of now, Motorola, Lenovo, Asus, YU are all online-exclusive brands in the country, alongside a number of Chinese brands, all catering to a sizable tech-savvy niche set of buyers. Of course, brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus etc. are also sold exclusively online, as per their global strategy.
Coming to some of the hardware specs of the two devices, both are expected to be mid-range smartphones with 1.5 GB of RAM and just 8 GB of internal storage each. Both devices will also have microSD card slots to expand storage capacity. They’ll both be powered by Exynos 3475 SoCs, which comes with a quad-core CPU clocked at 1.3 GHz, and are designed and manufactured by Samsung LSI. As for the display panels, while the ON5 will feature a 5-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 720p resolution, the ON7 will come with a larger, 5.5-inch display, but without a bump in the display resolution, meaning it will have a lower pixel density. As for the batteries, the smaller device will sport a 2,600 mAh unit, while the larger handset will carry one that’s rated at 3,000 mAh.
Coming to the connectivity options on the two devices, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, A-GPS and MicroUSB 2.0 are thought to come as standard on both, while on the software front, the Mix Radio app and the My Galaxy app will come pre-installed on both the smartphones. There is however, no word currently on whether the handsets will come with Lollipop or Marshmallow out of the box. As for the cameras, both devices will sport the exact same 5-megapixel front camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The primary camera on the ON5 meanwhile, will be an 8-megapixel unit, while the ON7 will have a larger, 8-megapixel sensor as part of its primary, rear-facing shooter.
