As many of you know, Xiaomi has scheduled a press conference today. Initially, everyone thought that they intend to announce their new Mi 5 flagship at said event, but it seems like that won’t be the case. Xiaomi’s co-founder, Lei Jun, has confirmed that the company won’t be announcing their flagship at the event. Still, the company has announced the Mi 4 back in July 2014, and the Mi 5 should land in the coming weeks, unless Xiaomi intends to wait for January 2016, or something to that effect.

Either way, we’ve seen a number of leaks when it comes to the company’s upcoming flagship, and one of those leaks actually suggested that the Mi 5 might sport Qualcomm’s new 3D fingerprint scanner. This fingerprint tech is called ‘Sense ID’ by Qualcomm, and it will allegedly going to be able to scan through ”glass, aluminum, stainless steel, sapphire and plastics”, according to Qualcomm. Unfortunately, it seems like the Mi 5 won’t be equipped with such tech. According to an industry insider, Xiaomi Mi 5 won’t be featuring Qualcomm’s ‘Sense ID’ tech. That same source has said that Xiaomi was able to overcome initial difficulties in the development of the Mi 5, and that the company is back on track. He did not mention when Xiaomi plans to release this smartphone though, we’ll just have to wait and see.

We’ve seen a number of Mi 5 spec leaks thus far, and according to one of the latest ones, this smartphone will sport a 5.2-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display along with 4GB of RAM and a couple of internal storage options. The device will reportedly going to be fueled by the Snapdragon 820 processor, and a 16-megapixel camera is said to be available on its back. The 8-megapixel front-facing shooter has also been mentioned, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop will quite probably come pre-installed on this device with Xiaomi’s MUI 7 OS available on top of Google’s OS. The Snapdragon 820 SoC won’t be available before Q1 2016, so if this smartphone is going to be fueled by that processor, we won’t see it available for sale before January. Either way, we’re waiting for more info from Xiaomi, so stay tuned for that.
