Google recently unveiled their own router that works great in the home, it’s known as the OnHub, and it looks great. A recent teardown showed us that the Router actually is running on Chrome OS, not so surprisingly. The Google OnHub router had been sold out for quite some time. However, Google just Tweeted that the router is available again on the Google Store as well as a few other retailers including TP-Link Store, Best Buy, Fry’s, Micro Center, NewEgg and Walmart. It’s available in both black and blue as well, at all of these retailers. The OnHub router will work great with your current modem or modem/router gateway that many ISP’s are forcing on us these days. It supports 802.11 AC WiFi which brings in much faster WiFi for use around the house and even outside, as it has a wider range. Google says that you can have up to 128 devices connected to this router at the same time. This is great with more and more gadgets needing WiFi connectivity. Like our thermostat, our phones, tablets, smartwatches and everything else.
Basically what Google and TP-Link did here with the OnHub was look at the way we are using WiFi these days. Which is generally in conjunction with Bluetooth and other gadgets that we use everyday. And found a way to optimize our WiFi network. Get better signal, faster WiFi, and making it better for these devices that we use it with everyday. Google also has an easy to use mobile app for OnHub which allows you to change settings on your router to make it more efficient for your home.
The OnHub is designed to just sit anywhere in your house. It looks great on a table, or even next to a plant in your living room. It’s not an ugly router like the many others out there. Nor does it have a bunch of antennas outside of the router pointing in all sorts of directions. It does have antennas, however, they are all inside the router, making for a great looking router here. Google is selling the OnHub for $199 which is comparable with some of the routers available from ASUS, TP-Link and the others that are available right now.
