Xperia Z5 4K video test shows Snapdragon 810 heat issues conquered

Xperia Z5 4K video TestSony had to bear a lot of criticism around the Xperia Z3+ which was plagued with heating issues that caused the handset to force-close frequently, particularly when using camera apps. One of the primary reasons behind this is the use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, which is widely reported to suffer from overheating issues requiring manufacturers to throttle its performance.

The newly unveiled Sony Xperia Z5 also utilises the same chipset, so there was genuine concern how the handset would perform, especially given the Xperia Z3+ woes. Well the latest video test from our friends at Btekt shows that Sony has managed to optimise thermal performance.

They shot a 4K video which lasted for 10 minutes, it could have gone on for longer but the test was cut short due to time constraints. The handset did get “pretty warm” during that time, but not as hot as with the Xperia Z3+. Does this mean that we finally have a smartphone capable of realistic 4K video capture? Up until now, all handsets have had a limitation on how long we can record 4K video due to the performance hit.

It’s not clear whether this is a hardware or software optimisation in the Xperia Z5. Either way, we hope Sony can bring as much of its experience to optimise the performance of the Xperia Z3+ too.

Thanks Basil!
