The Snapdragon family of processors from Qualcomm has been powering Samsung’s flagship lines for years now. However, things went a little different this year due to the fact that the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge/S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy Note 5 smartphones came with Exynos chips designed by the Korean company instead of the Snapdragon 810 that runs on several top notch models such as the HTC One M9, LG G4 and Nexus 6. The loss of a customer like Samsung was a huge blow to Qualcomm and the chipmaker is trying to gain it back. Recently, a leaked document suggested that Samsung would be using the Snapdragon 820 SoC on its upcoming flagship, the next year’s Galaxy S7 and today a new report claimed that the processor has already been shipped to Korea for testing purposes.
The model sent for Samsung is an improved 3.X version of the chipset with even more powerful features. It retains the original custom Kryo cores, comes with the Adreno 530 GPU and has been manufactured with a 14nm FinFET process resulting in a 10% performance increase. Qualcomm has been spending a lot of time on improving the 820 and next year devices will have some amazing features coming out of the box. For starters, each core will be able to run at speeds of up to 3 GHz, which means they will be more powerful than ever. Moreover, the company recently announced a real-time malware detection system called Smart Protect that will block on a hardware level suspicious code from running, significantly improving the security. Additionally, the Adreno 530 GPU is reported to deliver 40 percent improvement over the previous Adreno 430. We can also expect a better performance and power efficiency.
Even if the next flagship from the Korean giant comes with the new Snapdragon chip, they will also release a version with their own Exynos on selected markets, as it has been happening in the last few years. As both S6 series and Galaxy Note 5 are now part of the past, the leaks about the upcoming device will pop up more often. However, there isn’t much information yet since it’s still early in the launch cycle. Samsung usually releases their new S flagship devices during the Mobile World Congress that takes place every March in Barcelona, Spain, and the Galaxy S7 is expected to come to life next year.
