Google’s New CEO Gets Wishes From Colleagues & Rivals

Alphabet-AH-1

By now, its probably common knowledge Google’s increasingly diversified portfolio including myriad new business interests like Calico medical research, autonomous cars, Fiber, Nest etc. are being spun-off as a separate entity distinct from its core internet businesses like search, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and Android, all of which will continue to remain under the Google branding. The new parent company for both Google and all these diverse businesses will be called “Alphabet Inc.” and founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin will be the CEO and the President respectively of the holding company. As part of the whole restructuring process, Google’s current VP of products, Mr. Sunder Pichai, will be promoted as the CEO of Google, according to a regulatory filing by the Mountain View, CA-based Google Inc. – the company that will now manage only the internet and related businesses of the erstwhile Google inc. as mentioned above.

Getting the keys to the corner office is always an accomplishment of gigantic proportions no matter how successful an administrator and business leader you are, and Mr. Pichai has been warmly congratulated by top-ranking business leaders on his elevation to the rank of Chief Executive of one of the largest and most talked-about companies on the planet. Among the business leaders to have congratulated Mr. Pichai are the chief executives of Google’s biggest rivals – Microsoft and Apple. Mr. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft Corp., and Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc. were amongst the very first high-profile business leaders to have wished Mr. Pichai through online social networking website Twitter. Mr. Pichai’s colleagues at Google also joined in, and Mr. Eric Schmidt, the Executive Chairman of Google Inc., and Mr. Bret Taylor, co-creator of Google Maps, ex-CTO of Facebook and Co-Founder of technology Quip, were also effusive in their praise for the new CEO.

As per the filing with US market regulator SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). Mr. Pichai will take over as the CEO of the company “Concurrently upon completion of the Alphabet Merger”. The filing goes on to say, “Since joining Google in 2004, Sundar has led a number of key consumer products which are now used by hundreds of millions of people and, prior to his current role, served as Google’s SVP of Android, Chrome and Apps”. The Indian-born CEO-in-waiting received his B.Tech degree from the IIT-Kharagpur, an MS from Stanford University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, according to a disclosure from Google.
