Last year OnePlus launched their first phone, appropriately titled the One, to much fanfare and plenty of criticism too. Most of this criticism didn’t get voiced against the phone, which we loved and still continue to, rather it was aimed at how OnePlus made the phone available. If you weren’t privy to what happened or just weren’t paying attention to all the OnePlus news last year, the company launched its phone very differently from other phones on the market in that it not only sold them exclusively online through its website, but that you had to have an invite to order one. Yes that’s not an invite to just get one for free or something, you couldn’t actually purchase the phone without an invite for the first 6 months or so, meaning it was just plain difficult to get one at times.
Now with the phones sequel, again aptly named the OnePlus 2, OnePlus is yet again offering the phone only by invite out of the gate. Carl Pei, the Co-Founder and Head of Global OnePlus took to the official OnePlus blog yet again and explained a little bit about the invite system and what’s going to be changing with the OnePlus 2. First off he confirmed that there will still be an invite system, but this time around they’re making some significant changes to help people get the phone easier, all while still keeping the original purpose of the invite system intact. This was done to control inventory so that the Chinese startup didn’t have tons of phones sitting in a warehouse unsold, a tactic that worked very well for the company as they pushed past the one million sold mark. Carl said inventory would be in the realm of 30-50 times higher than with the One, meaning there will be plenty of invites to send out instead of the small batches we saw for the first few months of the One.
Secondly they’re changing up how invites are passed out. When you order a OnePlus 2 it looks like you’ll be getting some physical invite cards to hand out to friends, a little gesture that’s sure to seal favor into their hearts forever. Users will also be getting sharable invitations much quicker this time around after having ordered the phone, something that again took months with the first device. As OnePlus is primarily a grassroots type of company it will of course offer some first dibs to the most active and vocal forum members, but those who aren’t as active or don’t want to take part in the official forums will be able to sign up for a reservation list where invites will be sent out on a separate basis from the forum invites. All these things are designed to make the experience of ordering a OnePlus 2, something that can only be improved over the mess that was the OnePlus One’s invite system.
