Wednesday, July 15th, 2015 was Prime Day. The day that Amazon declared they would have more deals than Black Friday. This was to celebrate the company’s 20th birthday. Hard to believe Amazon has been around for 20 years now, right? Many of us went into Prime Day expecting some sweet deals on all kinds of goodies. Seeing as that’s what we get on Black Friday. But it was basically Amazon’s way of getting rid of stuff that no one would buy. However, that’s not the worst part. When there were some decent sales, like the Nexus 6 for $399, it was sold out in less than 30 seconds. Unlike Google Play, Amazon’s site didn’t crash though. To be fair, Amazon likely sees more traffic everyday than Google Play does on Nexus launch days, though. So they are a bit more used to the traffic.
As Ashley Esqueda (from CNET) tweeted yesterday “Amazon wasted a real opportunity here to wow people with huge discounts and deals; this will literally turn off people curious about Prime”. I completely agree with her. There are many, many people interested in Amazon Prime, but are not sure the $99 per yer is worth the free shipping. Prime Day would have been a great way to showcase how awesome Prime really is, and Amazon crashed and burned. Ashley wasn’t alone, if you search #PrimeDay on Twitter, you’ll see many, many people raging about what a fail the day was for Amazon. Even though they likely still made a ton of cash. They could have made and sold so much more.
Hopefully this is a lesson to Amazon. They are probably the biggest e-commerce site on the web right now, with eBay not far behind them. It would have been nice to see more products that people were actually interested in, on sale. Amazon said there would be more deals than on Black Friday, not better deals. So I guess they did hold up that end of their hype train. But let’s be honest, the whole event was way over hyped, unfortunately. Hopefully everyone logged into the Amazon app and got their $10 gift card?
So let’s all just save up for Black Friday, we’re only a few more months away. November 27th, is just over 4 months away, hopefully we can get our hands on a decently priced 4K TV this year?
