It is an understatement to say that there are a lot of iPhone case options out there to choose from. There’s a case for every need, and a whole lot of customizable cases on places like Etsy for needs you didn’t even know you had. But beyond all the colors and frills, which cases will actually protect your phone?
Battle Damage has some answers for you. The team behind destroying your favorite gadgets decided to put some of the more popular high-defense cases to the test, and compared the results with an OtterBox Defender, a Lunatik TAKTIK Extreme, a Griffin Survivor + Catalyst, and a Lifeproof Fre. These are all cases that are made to take a beating, often boasting about meeting or exceeding military standards and using extra heavy-duty materials or rubberized edges.
The first test was pretty simple – the team through the smartphones on the ground in each respective case. The Griffin case failed early simply because the phone popped out of the case, which is a big no-no for a protective case. The Fre’s case broke outright and damaged the phone, which is the opposite of what it is supposed to do. The Lunatik model, meanwhile, actually protected the iPhone, which got away with only minor damage but still worked. The Otterbox Defender case saw some slight damage but left the phone untouched.
Then, because this is Battle Damage, they dropped a 50-pound safe on the surviving phones: Ouch. The safe had no problem smashing a phone entirely in half in the case of the Otterbox Defender. The extra materials on the Lunatik TAKTIK Extreme actually let it bounce out from underneath the crushing safe and, despite heavy damage, continue working.
So it seems clear that you should get the Lunatik case if possible – but there’s a big caveat: The TAKTIK Extreme case, selling for $125, appears unavailable for the iPhone 6. Better get on that, Lunatik. The Otterbox Defender, meanwhile, sells for all iPhone types at around half the price, which is something to think about.
