If you’ve been keeping up with Wired’s series Battle Damage, you know what to expect: Erik Beck and Justin Johnson of Indie Machine have fun destroying gadgets in weird ways – and in the process teach you a little bit about your favorite tech products.
When watching the videos, it’s easy to see all the fun stuff, and you get some fun comparisons of durability if you are considering using a smartphone or other electronics in a rough-and-tumble environment. After all, if you want a good action cam, then you probably want to know how well a GoPro will do if you drop it off a cliff (much better than the competitors, fyi). Battle Damage exists to replicate scenarios like that, along with some more ridiculous tests – like smashing an iPhone with a giant safe.
But the videos only show the highlights and slow-mo, which is important to keep the video to a shareable few minutes. They use simple tools like wireless baby monitors in innovative ways, and you get to see more of the team behind Battle Damage and the work they do.
It turns out that it takes a team of 25 people to put together those short videos, and that art specialists, safety refs, and quite a few more people. It’s even more impressive when you consider that the second seasons were filmed across only two days, and that around 36 gadgets were tested. The team is so devoted to the process that personal gaming devices were contributed to the effort – that’s some serious dedication.
