There are plenty of sandwich knives on the market, but almost all of them are basically just bread knives, maybe with a little extra heft to make them more suitable for sandwiches. Not so with this Kickstarter form Toronto, which advertises a real Sandwich Knife, capital letters included.
This knife, as you probably noticed right away, looks like two bread knives stacked together, and there’s a good reason for this. Take your average loaf of bread, and your average bread knife: Try cutting two perfect slices for a great sandwich. Unless you have a lot practice and skill, it’s a pretty tricky proposition. But one slice with the Sandwich Knife can cut two slices of equal size at once.
Well, that’s not quite true – the inner blade is a bit higher, so the two sandwich halves don’t actually separate. The idea is that you can just stuff in your ingredients, including messy sub-sando extras like chili, as if it was a big bread taco.
Actually, “bread taco” sounds like better marketing than what this Kickstarter has. The stated reason to buy the knife is that you get better, less messy sandwiches. It skips by the big hindrance: The Sandwich Knife can only slice bread into preset (and, frankly, very thick) slices. It also ignores that buying pre-sliced bread is incredibly easy for the average grocery customer, which seems like a major stumbling block to commercial success unless all your buyers eat is ciabatta.
What’s left is a cool idea that looks more like a late-night infomercial than anything else. But hey, if you fee like giving the Sandwich Knife the benefit of your doubt, you can get one by pledging $25. On the way, think about what else you could use the knife for beyond bread tacos. Slicing potatoes? Getting to the good part of a cantaloupe? Other ideas are welcome.
