When they first showed up back in January, the Connected Cycle Pedals were a high-quality example of the real Internet of Things: An everyday item (bike pedals) that used sensors and a cellular chip system to perform an Internet-based function. In this case, the pedals want to keep your bike safer.
Now that Connected Cycle has an Indiegogo page, we have a lot more information on use and pricing. These pedals come in four different colors and essentially serve as an advanced bike tracker and GPS app for all your excursions when paired up with a smartphone.
The GPS capabilities allow you to automatically record the bike paths that you take, so you know where you went and can review your favorite paths or the streets you found after your biking is done. It also measures every cycling movie, from speed curves and incline curves to the calories that you have burned biking.
However, what Connected Cycle is really pushing in marketing is the security options: With that level of bike tracking hidden inside the bike itself, the sensors are ideally placed to detect theft attempts. If someone tries messing with your bike (such as trying to unlock it), you receive an immediate smartphone alert, which lets you run out and chase away any thieves and/or dogs before something unpleasant happens. There’s no option to contact the cops, but with the tracking feature you will be able to see where your bike ends up if it manages to disappear.
The pedal is simple, doesn’t require any extra data fees, and is easy to install, which is probably why the crowdfunding program was such a success. Unfortunately, this means the good packages are already sold out. However, you can still get the fashion pack for $169, which is the best price now available for the pedals before they hit the market at the end of the year, just in time for Christmas.
