According to a press release by LG (source link below) the Korean manufacturer is set to release its LG AKA smartphone to markets overseas. This colorful Android smartphone was initially supposed to be an exclusive for the Korean market. LG has decided, however, to release this phone to markets in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Turkey. LG notes the fact that the phone has seen “healthy sales and positive customer feedback for its originality and sense of humor.”
What sets this phone apart from the pack, is the fact that it comes in four different styles or “personas” which are an important part of the device and represent one of four colors: white, yellow, navy, and pink. These personas translate into wallpapers, widgets, and ringtones. The phones also feature a set of animated eyes that can be customized by the user, that show when you place the colorful case on the phone. It is as if the phone is staring right back at you. LG also proudly notes that each phone is provided with a sticker pack so that users can use stickers, as well as markers or other ornaments to make their phone unique and stand out. This innovative thinking garnered the LG AKA an iF Design Award for “its unconventional approach to smartphone design.
LG also made some enhancements to the AKA lineup, adding what they have dubbed “an emotional UX element. This UX — or user experience — includes some unique customizable features such as glasses and eyebrows for the eyes. They also included a toy figurine that the user can digitize and make it a part of the user experience. To do this, the user simply takes a photo of the toy using AKA’s Snapshot tool, making a 3d version of the figure. This figure can then be used when taking a selfie so that the character will appear next to the user in the photo. We should point out that the camera on the LG AKA includes the Laser Auto Focus, Touch and Shoot and Gesture Shot, which also appears on LG’s current flagship devices such as the LG G3. To celebrate this move overseas for the phone, LG partnered with TUBA Entertainment to produce a YouTube series called Rotary Park, which will debut on March 20, 2015.
According to Juno Cho, president, and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications, “AKA is the first smartphone that gives owners a blank canvas to express their own personalities via a customized user experience.” He goes on to say: “AKA is about being creative and never losing sight of the things that make us young and interesting. This is a whole new direction in smartphone UX and we’re excited about where it may take us.”
But do not let this colorfully characterized smartphone fool you. The LG AKA has some pretty decent specs under the hood. The device has a 1.2 GHz Quad-Core chipset that powers a five inch HD IPS display. It packs a respectable 1.5F GB of RAM with a decent 16 GB of storage that is expandable with a microSD. The 8-megapixel rear facing camera as stated before has Laser Autofocus with Gesture Shot, and Touch and Shoot and it has a 2.1-megapixel front side shooter as well. For connectivity, we have 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, A-GPS, and USB 2.0.
LG AKA should be rolling out to your hands if you are in the above-stated areas soon, so you won’t have long to wait to enjoy the fun customization of this phone. There was no word from LG if this phone would leave these markets to see distribution to the rest of the world. For now LG is keeping this phone in certain markets which it feels would give it the best user base. What do you think of these colorful and fun phones?
