Spotify Updated to Support Android Auto

Now that Android Auto head units are beginning to ship, currently only from Pioneer. We are starting to see more and more apps updated to feature support for Android Auto. Which isn’t actually hard for the developer to do. As Android Auto is essentially just a second screen for your Android device. A good analogy is that it’s similar to having your laptop plugged into an external monitor. It’s pretty much the same thing, but it uses USB instead of HDMI, or VGA.

This week, Spotify updated their Android app to feature support for Android Auto. So if you’re one of the many Spotify users out there, like myself. Then you can now use Spotify with Android Auto, instead of Google Play Music. Android Auto isn’t all that’s new in the update for Spotify. They also say that the Discover feature has “gone horizontal” as well as the daily charts have been improved. So a pretty nice update here from Spotify.

Currently, only Pioneer has head units available that support Android Auto. They range from $800 up to $1400. And they are available at Best Buy as well as Amazon and of course Pioneer’s website. They are the AVH-4100NEX, AVIC-7100NEX, and AVIC-8100NEX. The only real differences between the three is that the higher end models have Nokia’s HERE maps installed with storage to save the maps offline. However, if you’re just using these head units for Android Auto, then that doesn’t really matter. They are all 7-inch displays, and aren’t super high definition. But that doesn’t matter in the car, I don’t think. We should be getting a review unit soon from Pioneer, and we’ll be covering a ton on the Android Auto front as soon as we get one.

Lots of exciting news coming out on the Android Auto front these days. Definitely exciting times. We should be seeing more head units available soon from the likes of JVC Kenwood, Panasonic and more. Also some newer Hyundai cars should be getting updated to feature Android Auto, basically any of their 2013 or later models with a 7-inch display will get Android Auto support and that includes the Sonata and the Azera.
