Sony Mobile targeting 38m smartphones in FY15; new 6-inch devices on the horizon?

Sony Mobile is looking to ship 38 million smartphones during FY15 (12 months to March 2016) according to a report from Digitimes citing sources at Taiwan’s handset supply chain. This would put it slightly behind FY14, where it is expected to ship 39.2 million smartphones. This new target reflects Sony’s new focus away from the entry/mid-range towards the premium segment.

New orders have begun to ship from Taiwan’s ODMs including the Xperia E4 from Arima Communications, Xperia E4g from Compal Electronics and Xperia M4 Aqua from Foxconn/FIH Mobile.

The same report suggests that these ODMs are now developing 6-inch smartphones for Sony Mobile. It is unclear whether these are planned to be mid-range devices such as the Xperia T2 Ultra or a premium successor to the Xperia Z Ultra.
