This isn’t really a surprise, but in RootMetrics 2nd Half of 2014 network performance results, Verizon has taken the number one overall place for network performance. During this test, RootMetrics did over 5.7 million speed tests, drove over 288,000 miles, and tested over 6,000 indoor speeds. Verizon came out in front, with a pretty substantial lead, followed by AT&T. But things get a little strange with Sprint and T-Mobile. In metro areas, T-Mobile was much more reliable than Sprint, but outside of metro areas, it was the opposite. Not too surprising for those that don’t live in the city, but that’s what RootMetrics found.

T-Mobile’s average data speeds were between 10-20mbps in most areas which is the same results as what Verizon and AT&T got (however, T-Mobile had more of the 20+ results than AT&T and Verizon), which gave them a respectable third place behind AT&T and Verizon, and still pretty far ahead of Sprint. The majority of Sprint’s tests were at 0-6mbps. Which probably isn’t surprising at all, if you’ve used Sprint in the past few months. I can hardly get a LTE signal, nevermind doing a speed test.

Here in Michigan, Verizon topped out everyone. Which isn’t too surprising, I’d say T-Mobile would be a close second. In Michigan for the first half of the year, T-Mobile actually edged out Verizon. But it looks like Verizon was able to take their spot back. Which is nice for big red.

While these tests didn’t really surprise us, it’s always cool to see the smaller carriers climbing the ladder and beating some of the bigger carriers in some areas. Especially considering they have less cash to spend on their network. It will definitely be interesting to see how the four carriers fair in the first half of 2015. Especially with Sprint and T-Mobile heavily investing in their network. Do you think we’ll see more of the same? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
