A few months ago we saw a new app being released by Microsoft under their Garage program. This app was the Next lockscreen and was actually a rather decent lockscreen app which allowed you to customize a good amount of lock screen widgets. Well, it seems the company quite liked the idea of lockscreens apps as they have today released a new one to the Play Store labelled ‘Picturesque’. As the name suggests, this is a highly visual intended app and basically offers users the ability to use any of the last six day’s Bing homescreen images as your main lock screen image. If you don’t like the current one, then you can just shake your device (a bit vigorously actually) to change the image. Although as mentioned, there is only six images to shake through.
As this is clearly a Bing motivated app, you will be less surprised to hear the app offers Bing directly on the lockscreen. As such, you can (if you want to) search the internet for whatever you want, directly from your homescreen. As long as it is through Bing, of course. Not to mention that the lock screen comes with a couple of additional pages thrown in too. The first swipe left will bring you to a news widget page, which lets you see what’s going on that day (seems to be location-based so more local than world news). This is followed by another swipe left which brings you to the lockscreen settings page. Here, you can tweak the lockscreen in a number of basic ways.
Not forgetting that a number of more standard features that you would expect with a lockscreen app are also on offer. These include, weather updates, camera shortcuts and, of course, the ability to receive notifications of missed calls, emails and texts on the lockscreen page. If you liked Microsoft’s Next offering then you might want to give this one a go. If you are not the biggest Bing fan in the world, then maybe this one is not for you. Either way, the lockscreen app is free and available to download now via the Play Store.
