It has been more than 2 months since I embarked on a skin journey with DRx clinic, and there’s no turning back! My breakouts are minimal and my skin is so clear from acne now! Apart from using their skin care products religiously; I have also tried their Essential Facial (Plus) for general maintenance.
However, my freckles that have followed me since my teenage years are still obvious. So Dr. Teh recommended me one or two sessions of Q Switch Laser treatment to get rid of them.
I have been seeing Doctor Teh for a few times and every time she says that she can’t wait to get rid of my freckles. I just have so many of them on my face. On my fourth visit, finally she said that my skin is ready for a laser treatment.
I was really excited as I have been wanting to do it for the longest time. I also felt really nervous because I have heard so many horror stories of people getting their face burnt from laser treatment. Fortunately, Dr Teh was really patient in addressing my concerns. She said that she is very experienced in laser treatment and she will know what frequency to use for my skin (i.e., too low of a frequency you won’t see the effect, too high you might ended up burning your skin).
On the day of my laser treatments, I was told to arrive 30 minutes earlier. This is because I requested for numbing cream and it will take roughly 30 minutes for the numbing cream to have its full effect. Some people did it without the numbing cream, but I very kiasi and I have zero tolerance for pain. My eyes were also covered by this “ultra-man” like protective metal caps.
Dr Teh came after 30 minutes and I can feel that my whole face is numb by then. She started by doing one shoot and asked me “pain anot”. I was like “eh ok wo”. On a scale of 1 to 10, the pain is like 1 – 2. The Q-switched laser is used to remove unwanted brown spots, sun freckles, or tattoos from one’s skin. The laser energy pulse, which is in billionths of a second, releases the pigment into the skin so it can be naturally reabsorbed and disposed of by the body.
The laser energy feels like many tiny hot dots on my skin. The discomfort is greatly reduced by a stream of cold air directed at the spots during treatment.
Dr Teh uses the laser to send short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at my targeted areas. This is done at a very precise manner and one layer at a time. Hence, only the freckles absorbed the energy beam and this leaves the surrounding skin untouched.
Towards the end of the treatment, I felt a strong burning sensation on the treated area.
This is because the heat energy was wrapped in my skin.
After that, a consultant applied soothing cream and Dermal-Rx sunblock on my skin. Dr Teh told me that the burning sensation will last for 30 minutes to one hour. I was really afraid of the burning sensation so I sat and waited at the clinic until it is gone. If anything happens, Dr Teh can save me! After all, I am worrying too much because the burning sensation disappeared after a while. So I left and went home immediately because my spots were really dark after the treatment.
After a few days, the pigmentations will be removed by the body naturally. On the first day, the spots darkened and formed a crust so it felt a bit bumpy. On the second and third day, the spots were still dark but the bumps were no longer there. On the fourth day, when I washed my face, some of the freckles literally fall off my face. Some of the spots were also stuck to my facial cotton when I use my DRx toner. On Day 5, my face is 90% clear. So amazing right?
My recovery process was faster that expected – 5 days instead of one week. It is true that single treatment usually removes greater than 75-100% of an individual brown spot. I am so happy to announce that after living with my freckles for more than 10 years, most of them are finally gone!
Two weeks after the treatment, I traveled to Boracay and sun bathed for a bit. Some of the freckles came back but definitely not as jialat as before (those around my eye lid were not removed on my first treatment as I have not gotten use to the bring light). This is because laser only removes pigmentation on the skin surface, and I have a lot more pigmentation underneath my skin. So with exposure to UV rays, my pigmentation will be triggered. So it is very important to apply sun-screen and to protect my skin from UV rays.
I can’t wait for my second laser treatment already!
