Motorola started a completely different journey back when Google purchased the company. We’ve seen a completely different line of devices being introduced by the company, and very few people had something bad to say about them. Now, as you all know, Motorola Mobility is owned by Lenovo who acquired it from Google, and is starting a new journey in a way. MobileSyrup held an interview with Motorola Mobility’s president, Rick Osterloh, let’s see what he had to say.
“The biggest opportunity in mobile is going to be in the very aggressive price points with great smartphones,” said Motorola Mobility’s president, and it seems he’s right. If the price is right, phones seem to fly off the shelves, presuming those phones are good enough, of course. There are a lot of factors here though, brand recognition is definitely one of them, but no doubt that Motorola’s Moto G device is one of the better competitively-priced devices out there. Mr. Osterloh added the following: “We think that the Moto G is for people who want better value for money, but already own a smartphone. The Moto E is aimed at first-time smartphone buyers. Being very aggressive in both of these tiers is very important.”
Motorola actually has two really affordable handsets in their lineup at the moment, the Moto G, and the even more affordable, entry-level Moto E handset. The company has recently announced the Moto E LTE variant in a rather unique way, here’s our hands-on with the device. Mr. Osterloh also commented on the Moto X, Motorola’s current flagship. “We need Moto X as a vehicle to introduce a number of interesting observations, and we use it for that purpose. But it serves that purpose because we want these innovations to go into our lower-cost products as soon as they can,” added Motorola’s president, saying that the Moto X serves as a platform for new smartphone tech. He also said the following: “That’s a different mentality to anyone else in our industry. Both for those that won’t introduce products as low price points, or who make them substantially compromised in capability.”
Motorola Moto X isn’t a perfect smartphone, not at all, but it’s great at what it does. It remains to be seen if Motorola will be able to turn more profit under Lenovo’s guidance, we all know that turning profit wasn’t exactly Motorola’s strong suit lately. Motorola sold just over 10 million smartphones in Q4 2014, and they’ll have to do a lot better in the future. Lenovo has a plan to turn things around, it will be interesting to see what happens next.
