Mad Catz has a new idea for a game controller, and yes, it transforms. This adaptable, module-friendly Lynx 9 controller was announced at CES 2015, and it looks designed to handle just about anything that gamers want to throw at it.
The Lynx 9 is, like many third party controllers on the market, designed for Android platforms and PC gaming – the market for consoles is so saturated by first party, brand name controllers that few independent companies have a chance. However, the mobile and PC markets are filled with potential, and Mad Catz is trying to reimagine what the mobile controller looks like.
The result is certainly imaginative. This controller looks like a robotic, normal-sized model in silver and black at first glance. However, the Lynx 9 transforms – its handles elongate and the controller pieces branch apart, allowing gamers to attach different modules and devices for easier play.
Want to play at your computer? The normal size and the include cables will work just fine. Feel like playing on your Android phone? The controller branches out and offers a removable clip to hold your phone. Even more impressive is the computer tablet version, in which the controller expands and actually holds the Android tablet within its frame, like a big robotic hug.
Then there are the separate modules that can be attached. For now, Mad Katz is focusing on a keyboard that can attach to the bottom of the controller for swift typing and social media. However, there’s also a track pad module that allows you to move around as if using a mouse. A built-in mic can also let you give voice commands.
The whole device is part of the GameSmart ecosystem, too, so expect future compatibility as well. The downside is the price, which starts at $299.99. However, this is also a matter of perspective: The Lynx 9 ships with all its available modules and modes, making that price tag more reasonable.
