Samsung has announced the company has started production of the industry’s first 8 GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM. The new memory is being produced using Samsung’s new 20-nanometer (nm) capabilities. Joo Sun Choi, Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing with Samsung says the new dies will contribute to “the timely launch of UHD, large-screen flagship mobile devices.”

Besides increasing the capacity of RAM that can be put into a mobile device, Samsung’s new chips are faster than typical chips used in PCs with an input/output data rate of up to 3,200 Mbps. This provides greater support for continuous video recording, even at UHD resolutions, and continuous shooting of high-resolution images exceeding 20 MP in size. Samsung also figured out how to consume less energy with the new chips. One of the new chips will save up to 40 percent in power compared to a similarly sized chip produced with a 4 GB die.

Samsung says they have started to provide DRAM packages based on their new 8 GB and 6 GB dies this month. This means there is a good chance we will see some devices announced for 2015 that come with 4 GB of RAM.
