Google Sends invites to Developers to purchase a Project Tango Dev Kit

Project Tango

Project Tango is a really interesting project from Google. It’s right up there with Project Loon (the one where Google is attempting to bring internet to everyone with balloons). It used to be that only those developers that signed up at Google I/O for Project Tango, were able to buy the Development Kit, which does cost $1024, pretty cute of Google to price at that number right? I guess only geeks will get that. Anyways, it appears that Google is opening it up a bit more now. They are sending invites to those that have not signed up at Google I/O back in June to buy their Project Tango Development kit.

In the email being sent out to developers right now, Google makes it clear that quantities are limited, and are only for the selected “professional developers” to whom the email was sent to. So if you get the email, you can’t just send it to someone else to buy it, unfortunately. It looks like the email accounts that got the email have been white listed, as the Google Play listing hasn’t changed at all, just yet. Google also states toward the bottom of the email that this is not a consumer product, and is for development purposes only. Which we kinda knew that, but it’s cool to be told again anyways. Also, who would spend over a grand on a tablet? That’s just insane.

The Project Tango tablet features an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. So for most of us, it’s our dream tablet. However, only a few people will be able to buy it, and it’s not even a consumer product. I really hope we see 128GB of storage in Android tablets soon. That’s one area where Apple has beat us, the storage capacity of tablets and smartphones. That should change soon though.
