Yesterday was huge for Microsoft. The Redmond giant finally announced their upcoming OS, Windows 10. The new OS is said to return to its roots, offering a much more traditional interface that blends Windows 8’s future-pushing elements.
Windows 10 was all over the news yesterday. We also have a great Windows 10 FAQ post for you, but Microsoft had other great things to share yesterday. These stories were obviously overshadowed by Windows 10’s magnitude, but we are here to keep you up-to-date on them.
Windows smartphones are about to skyrocket with 50 new manufacturers on-board
I must say Windows Phone is my second favorite mobile OS, but it could have become #1 with the right strategy. The operating system is fluid even with low end specs, not to mention, the interface is simple and very dynamic. Live tiles also create a level of interaction that is much more visually stunning.
Windows Phone is great, but it’s failing mostly for a couple reasons – not enough developer support and few manufacturer options. At this point Nokia/Microsoft is your very best bet for a Windows Phone, and other options are amazingly scarce.
This is about to change. Microsoft is trying to entice more manufacturers by keeping the OS free for those who make smartphones or tablets smaller than 9 inches. It’s said 50 new manufacturers have jumped on board following said news.
Rumors of a Xiaomi Windows Phone device have also started circulating. Could it be that the popular Chinese manufacturer is finally ready to go multi-platform? Rumors say Xiaomi’s Windows device would cost only $50, which would be a huge move.
MSN.com re-launched as a new platform
Remember when MSN.com was one of the hottest news websites and search engines around? Things have really changed since then, but Microsoft is willing to give MSN another try with today’s re-launch.
The new website is completely different. It gives you quick access to all your Microsoft services, including Outlook, Office, OneDrive, Skype and more. You can even access popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
It’s meant to be your all-in-one window to your internet world. There’s also news, and you can customize your preferences for the page to show your specific interests.
This is not exactly new, as users have been able to beta test this for a few weeks, but the new website has just gone live for everyone. Go check it out at MSN.com.
MSN apps replace Bing apps
To show Microsoft is serious about this MSN re-launch, the company has replaced all Bing apps and renamed them with the MSN moniker. All apps will keep their original names, but it will come second to “MSN”.
Only one app’s name will change, which is Bing Finance. This app will now be referred to as MSN Money. All apps will also follow the same design language and will all work with MSN in the cloud. This is a platform-wide update, guys. I am not sure why we didn’t hear more about it.
Sway helps you create gorgeous websites
Sway wasn’t exactly announced at the press event, but it’s a brand new tool for easily creating gorgeous websites. It is announced right next to all the other products, so we thought we should add it to the list.
Sway will be part of the Office suite. It will offer an interactive and very simple way to upload your content into the web. Sway takes design elements and professional opinions, putting them into an algorithm that does all the work for you.
It can be hard to create a nice website without coding skills and a solid design background, making this a great tool for the average web content creator.
