Google May Be a bit More Flexible with Android Wear Customization than We Thought

Coming out of Google I/O earlier this year, we had heard that Google was really tightening their grip with Android Wear, Android Auto and Android TV. What we mean by that is there wouldn’t be any manufacturer skins like we see on Android. But, according to Google’s Lockheimer, it’s not as tight as we thought it might be. Which we’ve already seen Motorola customize their Android Wear smartwatch by adding in some extra features that the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live didn’t have. ASUS is planning to give users a first hand look at how customization will look on Android Wear with their upcoming Zenwatch, which was shown off at IFA last month in Berlin. According to Lockheimer:

“It’s not some Google-way-or-the-highway kind of thing. We’re trying to find the right balance of differentiation and customization.”

Which is great. It’s great to have some customization there, but there’s also something known as going to far. Which we’ve seen with a lot of these manufacturer skins on tablets and smartphones these days. Lockheimer also stated in this interview with Re/Code that the Nexus line will continue well into the future. Many were fearing that the Nexus program might go away soon, especially with Android Silver, but that appears to not be such a big concern now. Lockheimer stated “best way to develop an operating system is to do so in parallel with a piece of hardware.”

In case you’re living under a rock, the new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 were announced yesterday by Google. And they kind of surprised us here. The Nexus 6 is made by Motorola and is a super premium device, and also comes with a premium price tag of $649. The Nexus 9 is made by HTC and will cost $399. How many of you are excited that Nexus will continue into the future?
