China preorders 2 million new iPhones in six hours

If you were wondering whether China was interested in Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, the answer is a definite yes. Following the devices getting an official China launch date earlier this week, China’s three major telecom carriers-China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile-have all held preorder events. And the numbers they posted were pretty impressive.

According to Chinese tech site Weifeng, across the three telecoms’ events, Chinese customers ordered 2 million new iPhones in just the first six hours. Given that Apple logged four million global preorders in the first twenty-four hours following its launch event, China’s numbers are impressive, especially considering that these preorder events began on the eve of a major national holiday.

Preorders in China for customers who’d like to buy the handsets directly from Apple don’t begun until October 10th. The phones will also be available to preorder at all of Apple’s authorized retailers on that day, so China’s preorder numbers may get another significant boost next Friday, when those preorders open up.
