In a day about the large screen powerhouse Google (Motorola) Nexus 6, it’s been announced that Canadian carrier Bell are to carry the exclusive on the black and white Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones, due for launch on the 31 October 2014. Bell’s customers will benefit from a digital copy of the PlayStation 4 game, DriveClub; Sony Stores will carry the orange and green color versions of the Xperia Z3 Compact. We’ve no word on pricing just yet but with two weeks to go, we’re sure this news can’t be far away.
Sony’s press release on the matter makes much of the Xperia Z3 Compact’s design and size, citing that it’s perfect for one handed use. And it’s true; Sony have broken the traditional Android smartphone rules by packing a very similar specification to the larger Xperia Z3 into a smaller body. The Xperia Z3 Compact is based around a quad core 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor backed up by 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. It has a 4.6-inch, 720p resolution Triluminous display, a 20.7 MP rear camera complete with some very clever software optimization, a 2,600 mAh battery and Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat. The device benefits from dust and waterproofing, too, so is designed to be taken and used pretty much anywhere. Where the Z3 Compact differs from the larger Xperia Z3 is in the screen size and resolution (the Z3 has a 5.2-inch, 1080 screen), 2 GB of memory rather than 3 GB (likely to help the Xperia Z3 performance with a higher resolution screen) and a smaller battery. Sony make use of their STAMINA mode, which is designed to shut down parts of the ‘phone when idle and save battery. Both the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact are reputed to see two days to a charge.
Bell Mobility is one of Canada’s largest three carriers alongside Rogers and TELUS. It offers a legacy CDMA network, plus GSM / 3G and LTE networks across the country. Perhaps running multiple types of networks may go some way to explaining why Canadian carriers have a reputation for being the most expensive in the world? Regardless, it’s great to see the new Sony flagship models gaining exposure in Canada. What do you, our readers think? Would you switch carrier to Bell to chase the Z3 Compact?
