GoZoneWiFi to bring free Wi-Fi to NFL cities next year

GoZoneWiFi_Slide

Getting free WiFi in major cities is no easy task. Even when there is a service offered, most of the time the signal comes from outside polls, which doesn’t work to well indoors. A new player, GoZoneWiFi, is looking to change that with an inside-out strategy.

They partner with bars and restaurants, referred to as “hosts,” that install the equipment for free. When users log in, ads will show up via splash pages. It’s a win-win for everyone. The advertisers can geo-target their customers, the establishments can tout free Wi-Fi, and the consumer gets good quality access to the internet. The host establishment can also send coupon codes to all users on the network.

GoZoneWiFi already has offerings in Miami, but they are targeting 25 NFL cities next year.

The dream of free Wi-Fi everywhere might be a long way off, but with new strategies such as this, we are only that much closer.

Surprise! Amazon’s Echo has arrived

IMG_5892Well, well. Look at what my lovely wife got me as a belated Christmas present.

That’s an Amazon Echo , the shopping website’s new in-home personal assistant. It was announced in early November , but didn’t start shipping until just before Christmas. It costs $199, but Amazon Prime members are able to get one for $99, which is how my wife wound up buying one.

The Echo is a lot like Apple’s Siri, but in a dedicated device that’s a 9.25-inch-tall black tube. You can talk to the Echo by addressing it as either Alexa – the default name – or Amazon. It’s always listening for that trigger word, turning on instantly and reacting to questions and commands.

I’ll review it once I’ve lived with it for a while. After all, a product like this is something you work into your lifestyle. How well it integrates into your daily routine will be a measure of its success. Some of the early reviews were not kind, but this is a platform that’s expandable. I’m taking the long view on this one.

That said, here are a few initial impressions:

• The Echo’s setup requires a few steps, but a simple cheatsheet in the box and a voice prompts guide you quickly through the process. After plugging the Echo on, you connect your smartphone or computer to its own Wi-Fi network, then tell the device the name of your in-home Wi-Fi network. You download an app (available for both iOS and Android) to complete the setup process and walk through some examples of what Echo can do. There’s even a video tutorial that plays in the app.

• As with the voice search feature on Amazon’s FireTV , the Echo’s voice recognition is excellent. So far, it has only misheard one command, but you can use the app to correct the device’s mistake, which then improves its accuracy.

• The Echo has a very good directional microphone, and hears us from all corners of the room. (You can speak into an included Wi-Fi-based remote control when you’re not nearby.) When it switches on in response to the word “Alexa”, a light ring on its top fires up and a bright segment of the circle “points” in your direction, indicating the Echo knows where you are in the room. It’s a little creepy, but also pretty cool.

• You can ask Echo about the weather (both locally and in distant places), request a news briefing, play and even shop for music, ask for facts and even do calculations. For example, Echo will tell you how many teaspoons are in a gallon (768). When it doesn’t know what to do with a query, it sends a link to a search on Bing to the Echo app.

• If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can have the Echo stream Prime Music, which is similar to Apple’s iTunes Radio or Pandora. My wife holds our family’s Prime account, so this feature isn’t available to me. But you can set up multiple Amazon profiles, so I included my wife’s. Now I can switch to it and use the Prime Music feature. You can also stream radio from TuneIn or IHeartRadio .

• The sound is surprisingly good. It’s still clearly a single speaker on a relatively small device with simulated stereo, but the audio is pleasant in the living/kitchen area of our one-bedroom apartment.

So far, I like Echo. The key to its ultimate success is how Amazon expands its capabilities over time, and whether it grows into something more than a cool novelty. I’ll report back in a month or two and let you know.

AH Awards 2014: Best Cache Cleaner App of the Year

AH Awards 2015 _ Best Android Cache App

This is something we don’t really think about that often. Using an app to clean the cache on our phones. Since you can go into Settings > Storage and click on Cache and it’ll clear the cache on your phone or tablet, many of us don’t use cache cleaning apps like Clean Master. But it’s better to use one, as it’ll show you which apps are using the most of your cache. For instance, Tumblr, and Vine are big culprits there. So which apps are the best for cleaning the cache? Let’s have a look at this year’s winner and runner up.Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 10.05.52 AM

Winner: Clean Master

Clean Master is an app I’ve used for quite a while. It works well and has all kinds of other useful features included as well. For instance, you can also give your phone a boost by clearing out the RAM, as well as uninstall apps you haven’t used in a while and also clear the cache. It breaks down which app is using the most of the cache, and tells you the size. Usually for me it’s Twitter, Tumblr then Instagram. But it’s a nice app and works really well for it’s purpose, the developer also has a few other apps on the Play Store you may want to check out.

Runner Up: CCleaner

Those that are hardcore Windows users may know this app from your PC, but CCleaner recently came to Android and it’s been a crowd favorite ever since. It’s not as feature rich as Clean Master though, but does allow you to clear your cache, your SMS log, as well as your call log. To keep your Android phone running fast and smooth. It’ll also allow you to clear your browser history and free up a little more space.

Honorable Mentions

  • DU Speed Booster

  • AVG Cleaner and Battery Booster

Review: How to Use a Borrowed Phone With Your Own Phone Number

Hotel My Phone overview pic

It happens every day. People either forget their smartphones, or discover that their phones’ batteries are dead. So, if they have to send a text or make a call, they borrow a phone from a friend. It’s not the end of the world, but it does have a disadvantage: The call or text won’t come from your own phone number, so you have to explain that it’s really you on an unfamiliar number. If it’s a call, the recipient may even ignore it due to the strange number. And the borrowed phone won’t have your contacts in it, so if you can’t recall a person’s number, you’re sunk.

But now there’s a new app that allows you to temporarily log in to a borrowed phone to create a limited virtual copy of your own absent or dead phone — a copy that allows texting or calling from your own number, and displays your contacts.

The app, available for both Android and iOS, is called Hotel My Phone, and I’ve been testing it. It mostly works, but it still has a few bugs and limitations that may frustrate some users.

A text sent from a virtual iPhone inside a physical Android phone

A text sent from a virtual iPhone inside a physical Android phone

Hotel My Phone comes from a tiny Montreal company, PplConnect, which earlier this year released its first product, also called PplConnect, which allowed Android users to make and receive texts and phone calls on a PC or Mac. (Apple has since built similar calling functionality for iPhones into the Mac, and already had migrated texting across all its devices via its iMessage service.)

The company describes Hotel My Phone as a sort of Airbnb for phones. The idea is that you get a small circle of close friends to download the app, creating a trusted network of phones you can use with your own number in a pinch. You can even “check into” an Android phone to turn it into your virtual iPhone, and vice versa, if both phones have the app.

You can also use strangers’ out-of-network phones as hosts, by quickly downloading the app onto them, though the company plans to charge about $1 per use for this scenario (using phones in your network is free).

While Hotel My Phone is free, there are some fees, though the company starts you off with $1 in credit. Calls cost about three cents a minute. And if your phone is dead or off, texts cost 10 cents each, though the app itself can also send and receive text-like messages, which are free.

The app works by storing your phone’s number and contacts in the cloud, and making them available when you log in on a borrowed phone. The company says that your information is completely erased from the borrowed phone when you log out, and that the lender’s data is also protected.

For my tests, I downloaded the Hotel My Phone app to two Android phones — a Nexus 5 and an HTC One M8. I also downloaded it to an iPhone 6. This allowed me to pretend I was three different people, each with his or her own phone and distinct phone number.

I was able to use the Android phones as hosts for each other and for the iPhone. And I was able to use the iPhone as a host for each of the Android phones.

Hotel My Phone Pass Your Phone Over

Hotel My Phone lets you securely share your phone with another user.

One important caveat: Hotel My Phone doesn’t go beyond calling, messaging and contacts. It isn’t intended to replicate anything more from the virtual phone, so you won’t see, for instance, the native home screens from your phone on a borrowed phone, or be able to use your other apps.

In each case, when I logged in to the app, I was able to see my virtual phone’s contacts, and its messages. When I made calls from the virtual phone, they appeared on the phone I was calling as though they came from that phone’s number, not the number of the actual physical host phone.

The app works better on Android than on iOS. For instance, if your absent or dead phone is an iPhone, texts you send from the virtual iPhone running on the host phone must come from a generic number, not your real one. And you can’t view your call logs. The company says this is because of the nature of Apple’s iOS operating system, which doesn’t allow access to certain features of the phone that Android does.

On Android, this use of a generic number for texting only occurs if your real phone is off or dead.

I also ran into a serious bug affecting only the iPhone. When using my iPhone as a physical host for either of my test Androids, I couldn’t make a phone call, but instead got an error message.

The company says this latter bug has been fixed in a new iPhone update to the app, which will appear soon in Apple’s App Store.

In general, I liked the idea of Hotel My Phone, but found it rough around the edges. Even after its release on Dec. 11, the company was still scrambling to expunge bugs. It issued a bug-fixing Android update just hours before I wrote this review.

If you’re the kind of person whose phone often dies, or who occasionally forgets her phone, Hotel My Phone is worth a try. But be prepared for some limitations and bugs.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha in White Headed to Rogers

Galaxy Alpha White cam AH

Get them while you can – that would be the Samsung Galaxy Alpha… this time in white from Rogers for $0 down on a two-year contract or $700 outright on a no term contract. While the Galaxy Alpha is an AT&T exclusive in the U.S., it is widely available in Canada on Bell, Virgin, SaskTel, TELUS, Videotron and Rogers in basic black, although Bell and Virgin also offered the White and Gold model. Rogers will now making the move to add the white version to its offerings.

The Galaxy Alpha sports a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels with 312 pixels-per-inch (PPI), and with a display that size it is still very nice looking. It has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz as found in the Galaxy S5. It also has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage and no expansion is possible, which is rather strange with a Samsung device. It uses a 12MP sensor for the main camera with auto-focus and LED flash and a 2.1MP front-facing camera (FFC) for selfies. Power is provided with a 1860mAh removable battery and it is equipped with a fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, metal frame, bottom mounted speaker and runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

There was a lot of speculation as to why Samsung came out from the Galaxy Alpha – was it to replace their Galaxy S5 with metal… not with that 720p display. It was a mixture of high and low specs with a high price. Was the Galaxy Alpha cannibalizing sales of the Galaxy S5 or was it simply an experiment in metal to get a reaction from the public? Whatever was going through their thought process, it looks like the experiment may be over as yesterday reports were out that Samsung was removing the Galaxy Alpha from its lineup. Rumor has it that Samsung will scale back the specs and sell the device at a lower price so there will be no competition with its own Galaxy S series, possibly calling it the Galaxy A5.

Please hit us up on our Google+ Page and let us know if you plan on getting the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, or if you have one, do you like it… as always, we would love to hear from you.

Huawei’s Smartphone Sales Rose By A Third In 2014

Huawei logo

Huawei is one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in China. I doubt some of you who read this haven’t heard of this brand considering they’re present in various markets around the world for a long time now. Huawei has done a great job in 2014 and like some other Chinese brands managed to manufacture some really appealing high-quality devices. The company has also improved their Emotion UI which they ship on top of Google’s Android OS on their devices. Huawei Ascend Mate 7, Ascend P7, Honor 6 and Honor 6 Plus are truly remarkable devices and the latter two are really affordable as well.

It seems like Huawei is reaping the benefits of their hard work. According to Reuters, Huawei’s smartphone sales rose by almost a third in 2014, to $11.8 billion. Reuters claims this is based on the internal memo they have laid their eyes on which was issued by Richard Yu, head of Huwaei’s consumers business. They shipped about 75 million smartphones in 2014, which is more than 40% year-on-year increase, but it seems like Huawei expected to sell around 80 million units, so they actually didn’t meet their quota, although these are great results for the company. Huawei is expected to formally announce their results for 2014 in the coming weeks, along other companies, and we’re rather interested to see the numbers of some of them, like HTC, LG, Samsung, Xiaomi and Meizu.

Huawei is facing tough competition in China though, Xiaomi and Meizu mean business and both of those companies have done a great job in 2014. Both of them released great handsets this year and sold a ton of them. All these companies are expected to grow even further in 2015, and we’ll keep a close eye on Huawei, Meizu and Xiaomi, all three of those companies have great potential to slowly close the gap on Samsung and Apple. Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi are expected to battle for the top Chinese smartphone vendor in 2015 according to a Trendforce analyst, Alan Chen, who said the following: “How Lenovo’s Motorola acquisition plays out and whether Xiaomi can replicate its home market success overseas will be key factors in determining who becomes the top Chinese brand in 2015″.

This Smartphone Case Can Help You Film Stuff Even When Both Your Hands Are Busy

HANSNAP case_3

Smartphones are getting more powerful by the day, some of them are extremely expensive and many of you go to great lengths to avoid dropping your phones and protect them any way you can. There are all sorts of cases for your smartphones available out there nowadays, from regular plastic ones, to those which are built to withstand being dropped from a building. I’ve seen and used a ton of different cases, some of which I liked, some I did not, but I do prefer really thin simple cases with kind of a soft touch feel. Such cases, unfortunately, don’t offer solid protection to my phone, but I’m one of those people which are extremely careful while using a smartphone and I baby it basically. That didn’t stop me from dropping my phones throughout the years, many times actually.

There are some cases which are built for specific scenarios, like the one we’re going to talk about today. HANSNAP is a rather interesting case for your smartphone which straps to your hand and is currently listed on Kickstarter. The listing says that it fits Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and S5 devices, as well as iPhone 5 and 6 handsets, but I’m sure this thing will be available in many different sizes if the project reaches their goal. The logic is rather straightforward, this case is strapped to your hand, similar to a regular camera when you’re filming stuff, though this case straps to your hand by putting your phone on top of your palm. You can insert your phone in the case yourself which is connected to your hand, so that you don’t drop your phone while you’re doing something crazy, like climbing somewhere, running, or something similar. You can also film stuff this way, the phone sticks out just enough to let its camera film whatever you want to film. You can also detach the case (partially) from your hand and film something the usual way, while still being sure the phone won’t drop on the floor if you drop it.

If you’re interested in this project, you can check out the images down below and ultimately follow the source link down below and pledge some cash in order to help this project come to life. The project needs to reach $90,000 and 83 people pledged their donations at the time of writing this article, they managed to collect almost $7,000 at the moment, 17 days to go. Let us know what you think of this case and if you decided to help out.

Report: Xiaomi Might Launch The Redmi Note 2 On January 15

Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-logo-20

Xiaomi is all over the news in the last couple of days. We’ve seen a lot of leaks, rumors and reports regarding their device recently, and the company’s CEO even announced that the company will launch their new flagship handset next month. It’s a bit early for the company to launch the Mi4’s successor, but that’s the only device I can connect to a work “flagship” as far as Xiaomi goes. The company will also release a new, upgraded dual-LTE version of their Redmi 1S handset (though they might market it as the Redmi 2S, who knows) on January 4. This is not all though, we’re forgetting about the Redmi Note 2 handset which has also been talked about recently.

January 15th was mentioned several time in reports as the date Xiaomi will launch something, my guess is that they’ll launch either the Mi5 or the Redmi Note 2 on that date, while the latest report claims that the Redmi Note 2 will get launched on said date. As I already mentioned, the Redmi Note 2 handset has leaked several times thus far, we’ve seen its alleged back panel and specifications. According to the leak, this handset will feature a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) IPS LCD display along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. MediaTek’s MT6752 or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 SoC will power on this device and Android 4.4 KitKat will ship with the handset with MIUI 6 OS on top of it. 3,100mAh battery will come with the device as well, and as far as the cameras are concerned, this device is expected to feature a 13-megapixel snapper on the back, and a 5-megapixel shooter up front.

This would be a significant upgrade over the original Redmi Note, especially the 3G version which ships with only 1GB of RAM. A bump in resolution, processing power and storage is also welcomed and I believe Xiaomi will somehow manage to keep the price as low as it should be, the report says it will cost 899 Yuan, which is approximately $145. Do you think that Xiaomi will launch the Redmi Note 2 on January 15, or will they pick another date, or even month? Let us know what you think, we’d love to hear from you, as usual.

Purported Xiaomi Mi5 Image Leaks Yet Again, This Time Around It Includes A Fingerprint Scanner

Xiaomi Mi5 leak_45

Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, announced two days ago that the company will launch their newest flagship next month. This is a really unorthodox approach by Xiaomi’s CEO, but we’re not complaining. We now know for sure that Xiaomi will launch the Mi5 next month, unless Lei Jun had another device in mind when he said the word “flagship”, which I really doubt. We’ve seen many leaks regarding this device and I’m sure we’ll see many more until it finally launches. The launch is due to happen mid-January I presume, some reports are saying that the launch will occur on January 15 and Xiaomi said that they won’t participate at CES in Las Vegas, so that is out of the question.

A new leak came our way today, an image which allegedly shows of Xiaomi’s newest flagship. As you can see, this image has a physical home button below the display which will allegedly serve as a fingerprint scanner as well. Xiaomi usually stays away from physical home buttons, company’s implements capacitive buttons in their devices, so this is definitely an odd leak. I really hope this won’t happen because I do believe this actually makes the device uglier, it reminds me of Samsung’s Galaxy devices, but that’s just me. We have no way of confirming this, you should definitely take this news with a pinch of salt.

I don’t know if you recall, but two days ago we shared with you another purported image of the Mi5, which looked far better than the one we’re covering today. I really hope this is a dud and that Xiaomi won’t go the physical home button route in the end. Either way, we’ll find out what this company is planning next month. As far as the device’s specs go, many different leaks came our way as far as that is concerned. Some leaks are saying the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 SoC, while other say the Snapdragon 805 will be the processor of choice here. I lean towards the latter choice though, the Snapdragon 810 won’t be available until Q2 2015 and I doubt Xiaomi will announce their device in January and make it available 2+ months later, it just doesn’t make any sense. Your thoughts?

Xiaomi Laptop Listing Is Fake After All

Xiaomi laptop leaked retail listing_1

Many tech sites, including us, wrote about a Xiaomi-made laptop the other day. A rather interesting leak popped up online showing a really beastly tablet with Xiaomi’s logo on it claiming to be manufactured by that China-based company. That’s not all though, a listing popped up on banggood.com as well, offering this tablet for pre-order. No matter how unrealistic this seemed, there was some hope it’s real and that Xiaomi will announce it in the coming weeks / months. Well, that won’t happen.

Xiaomi’s spokesperson gave a statement to The Verge saying that this is not real. This was to be expected actually, though I didn’t expect Xiaomi to reach out and deny this so quickly though, but there you have it. It sounded way too good to be true anyhow, Intel’s i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and an aluminum build for an incredibly affordable price, yeah… this was to be expected. Either way, Xiaomi spokesperson didn’t exactly deny that the company will release a laptop in the future, so there’s still hope we’ll see something well built and affordable coming from this OEM in the future.

Unfortunately for Xiaomi, they’ve gained a rather bad reputation with international consumers. Many people consider Xiaomi an Apple copycat, which is of course not good for this company, it makes them look really bad. Xiaomi is definitely Apple-inspired, but they make really solid devices, like some other Chinese OEMs. Changing people’s mindset is a difficult thing to do, we’ll see how will Xiaomi fare once they reach other markets and finally leave Asia. They’ll have to face numerous obstacles on their way to global fame and it will be interesting to see how will they cope with everything.

Are you disappointed the Xiaomi laptop isn’t real? Many of you probably expected that thing to be fake, which is understandable, but that was a really powerful machine on paper and it would certainly be interesting to see Xiaomi launch something like that in the future. Do you think Xiaomi will be able to strive in other markets, or do you think the company has reached its peak in China?

Sponsored App Review: YouMap

youmapmain

YouMap is an Android app that aims to take care of all your streaming and casting needs from your Android smartphone or tablet using Chromecast and AirPlay protocols. That means you can mirror your display using a web browser, a TV with a connected Chromecast or even an AirPlay-enabled device. It’s a nifty little app that should help people performing presentations, showing off photos, teaching people to use apps and more. We can think of YouMap as a simplified and siloed VNC for Android, as it mirrors your display and audio to another. So with such an impressive feature list, just how good is YouMap?

To get started with the app, you’ll need to download YouMap from the Play Store. While some rooted devices and custom ROM’s might work out of the box, there’s no guarantees here and many of you, including myself, will need to download the free desktop app from the VMLite website.

2014-12-23 13.24.12

I’m not rooted, so I had to the same sort of thing. When you have the app all set up, there are some settings that you might want to take a look at. These include the VNC password and whether or not to record audio from the system or using the device’s microphone. Using the microphone might be especially helpful for those demonstrating something while talking.

2014-12-23 13.23.56

Once you have things set up, you can go ahead and hit the big red button, which should then give you a web address to access your Android device’s screen while connected to the same network or a VNC address.

youmap address

You can also choose to just cast your screen, which includes AirPlay devices as well. This is certainly an easy to send your Android tablet’s display to another that’s for sure. You can also record a video of what’s happening onscreen as well as take a screenshot whenever you like.

youmapcast (1)

YouMap is certainly an interesting app, and one that does exactly what it says it does. There’s no need to be rooted, which is a very nice touch for the vast majority of users and if you have a Chromecast where you’re looking to mirror your screen this is nice and easy. Sure, Google’s Chromecast now supports casting directly from Android, but there’s a good chance your device isn’t supported, sadly. The real start of the show here is the ability to use an HTML5 enabled web browser with little to no hassle. That means that for those using Android devices at work, they can share looks at apps and such with whatever machine they like. For the average user though, this is the type of app that’d be great to show off photos from a recent trip or holiday and it’s pretty easy to set up as well.

Ratings

  • Speed (4/5) – With little to no lag (depending on your network) this is a good option.

  • Features (5/5) – While the Chromecast support isn’t anything special, the VNC and simple web browser mirroring are. Add that to the support of AirPlay devices and there’s a long feature list here and many, many use cases.

  • Theme (4/5) – YouMap looks okay and the user interface is nice and minimal.

  • Overall (4/5) – While having to install an app on a computer is a pain, not needing to be rooted is a nice relief and overall, the package could be of great use to a lot of different users.

Pros

  • Works with just a web browser that has support for HTML5 audio, giving you near universal sharing.

  • Easy to set up without the need to be rooted as long as you have a computer within reach.

  • Even works with AirPlay devices, itself an interesting addition.

  • Lots of different uses from the office to sharing holiday moments with friends and families.

Cons

  • Having to install a desktop app is a little bothersome, but then so is rooting your device.

  • Chromecast support might be something users already have through Google’s cast screen feature.

Overall, YouMap is an app that might not appeal to everyone, but for those that have come up against the many cross-platform barriers there are today this will be a welcome savior. It’s fairly easy to set up, it works with Chromecast, AirPlay and even web browsers giving you a wide range of possibilities to share what’s happening on your Android device. I can see this being great for demonstrations thanks to the ability to record from the mic, or even simple uses like showing off photos. A great tool that breaks down cross-platform barriers, YouMap is worth looking at.

Analyst: Xiaomi Mi5 Probably Won’t Be Powered By The Snapdragon 810 SoC

Snapdragon 810 Chip cam AH

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors are probably the most respected mobile SoC today. These are extremely powerful chips which many manufacturers use in their devices, no matter if we talk about their low, mid or high-end device, Qualcomm has you covered with a range of processors for each category basically. The Snapdragon 810 processor has been a long awaited release by Qualcomm and that chip is almost ready for mass production, but not yet. Let me just remind you that this is a 64-bit octa-core chip which is expected to be included in many flagship handsets in the coming year.

That being said, many manufacturers are waiting in line to incorporate this chip in their newest flagship offering. We’ve seen many leaks in the last couple of weeks connecting some of the most expected flagship handsets with this chip, like the LG G4 and the HTC One M9 “Hima”, which is actually to be expected. Both of these devices are not expected to launch for another couple of months, so it’s quite possible both of them will incorporate the Snapdragon 810 in the end. Xiaomi will launch their Mi5 flagship next month and basically every rumor says that this handset will sport the Snapdragon 810, that might not be true though, this chip is not expected to hit mass production until Q2 2015. It is of course possible that Xiaomi will only announce their device in January and won’t release it until March, or something to that effect, but that would be… well, not smart by the company. Chinese analyst, Sun Changxu, also said that Qualcomm’s newest mobile SoC won’t go into mass production until Q2 2015 and that these rumors might be way off as far as Mi5’s processor of choice goes.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 SoC is a 64-bit octa-core mobile processor which consists out of 2 quad-core units, quad-core ARM Cortex A57 and quad-core ARM Cortex A53. This chip also includes an Adreno 430 GPU which should tear through any graphically intense processes you can throw at it. This SoC supports Cat.6 LTE connectivity along with USB 2.0 / 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.1. The chip is built on 20nm process and it also allows you to take advantage of Qualcomm Quick Charge functionality, should your device allow that of course.

Anyhow, do you think that Xiaomi Mi5 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 SoC, or will this China-based OEM think of something else, use the Snapdragon 805 perhaps?

Flyme 4.1.1.1 Update Is Now Available For Meizu’s MX4 Pro Handset

meizu-mx4-pro-01

Meizu MX4 Pro is one of the best Chinese smartphones in 2014. This China-based smartphone manufacturer has launched two flagship handsets this year, the MX4 and the MX4 Pro. Many would argue that the MX4 Pro was an unnecessary launch by Meizu considering that they launched it only two and a half months after the original MX4, but the company managed to sell a lot of MX4 Pro units and it’s a great phone, so… I guess objections are unnecessary, though I also feel like it was a bit unnecessary at that time. Either way, the phone was launched back in November and took China by storm, though it’s still now available elsewhere, except through reseller, as many Chinese phones are.

This handset has just received an update by Meizu, the company has updated their Android-based Flyme OS to version 4.1.1.1 (international update). This update brings a ton of improvements along with it, you can check out the full changelog if you follow the source link below, we’ll going to cover only some aspects of the software which got updated / improved. Meizu has tweaked the stumble sound effect when making a call, in order to make it more reliable. Camera has also seen some improvements, they have optimized the camera algorithm which modifies auto white balance and fixed issues with image underexposure and over sharpening along while also improving power consumption while using the camera (either for image or video shooting). General fluency of the OS has been improved along with Bluetooth reliability. The reliability of Flyme’s “Smart Touch” function has also been improved, same goes for the browser which used to mess up the layout of web pages in rare instances. All Wi-Fi and VPN issues have been taken care of by Meizu as well.

As I said, it’s a rather long list of changes, but we’ve listed the most important ones. If you’d like to check every single thing, feel free to visit the source link down below. If you’d like to update your MX4 Pro handset to this version of the OS, you can do that OTA via your phone, or visiting the source link below and downloading one of 4 sub-version of this update. You should be able to update it via OTA as we speak, if not, you’ll be able to do it soon, so just hang in there and let us know whether you like the update and has Meizu taken care of some issues you might have encountered on your device.

Oppo’s 3006 Device Gets Certified For Release In Malaysia

Oppo R5 unboxing_3

Oppo is apparently set to launch a new phone in the country of Malaysia in the future, as the Oppo 3006 looks to have just been certified by the Malaysian government. For the most part this looks like it will be a mid-range device not to unlike the recently launched Oppo 3005 and Oppo 3007, both which come sporting 4.7-inch displays that come with 720p resolution, quad-core processors clocked at 1.2GHz, and 1GB of RAM paired with 8GB of internal storage. While the Oppo 3006 hasn’t officially been unveiled or launched yet, the specs will probably fall along the same lines as the other two devices in the same lineup.

If we’re to expect a similar handset, then the Oppo 3006 should also be coming with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, a 4.7-inch IPS display with 720p resolution and the same 8GB of internal storage space. We’ll also likely see it come with an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP front-facing camera, all which should have LED flash equipped on the back. Other possible specs would most likely see the Oppo 3006 come powered by a 2,000mAh battery and Oppo’s own UI running on top of Android 4.4.4 KitKat, while also supporting Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connectivity for the network connections.

The Oppo 3005 and the Oppo 3007 also look nearly identical, which you can see fro the added images below, so we’d expect the Oppo 3006 to follow the same or a similar design trend. Although at this point we don’t know what Oppo has planned for the design in actuality. What we do know is that the Oppo 3006 will be a dual-SIM device just like the Oppo 3005 and the Oppo 3007, which means it’ll be a suitable handset for those that often travel to locations that support dual-SIM devices. So far this is just a certification listing of the device that has been spotted, so we don’t have any idea on price just yet. With it being tapped as a mid-range offering though we shouldn’t see this device cost too much, especially considering the prices we normally see from Chinese phone manufacturers.

Meizu M1 Note Is Now Available For Pre-Order From Oppomart

Meizu M1 Note AH-34

Meizu has announced their newest handset, the M1 Note, about a week ago. This device is a perfect budget device, I believe that’s the best way to put it. This handset brings forth a really well built device along with some commendable specifications for an incredibly low price tag, the 16GB version of this handset costs only 999 Yuan in China, while the 32GB version is somewhat more expensive, it is priced at 1,199 Yuan. The device really does remind me of the iPhone 5C, not only because Meizu’s invitations for the M1 Note event contained the back covers of the iPhone 5C, but because the back cover of the M1 Note looks almost exactly like the 5C’s back cover. That’s it though, there are no other similarities between the two devices, the M1 Note is certainly unique in its own way.

The phone launched in China yesterday, but was sold out almost immediately, no matter where you look. Many people have been wondering when will this device be available outside of China, well, those of you who are interested, can pre-order it now. Truth be told the device is available from Oppomart, a reseller, so it’s not exactly a direct offering from Meizu, but if you’re interested, this will do. Oppomart ships almost everywhere, though the device will cost you significantly more than it would if you were in China, the only offered versions are 16GB ones in Blue and White color options. The device will set you back $249, which is still not too expensive for this handset, which says a lot about its pricing in China. Anyhow, if you’re interested, follow the source link down below.

Meizu M1 Note features a 5.5-inch 1080p full HD display along with 2GB of RAM for all your multitasking operations and 16 or 32GB of non-expandable internal storage (though only the 16GB version is available from Oppomart at the moment). This handset is powered by MediaTek’s MT6752 SoC, a 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz along with Mali-T760 GPU for graphics processing. 13 and 5-megapixel cameras are available on this device on the back and front side of the phone, respectively. Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat OS ships with this device with Meizu’s very own Flyme 4 UI on top of it. 3,410mAh battery comes with the device and this handset offers dual-SIM, dual standby option for those of you who need to use two SIM cards in your devices. 4G LTE and dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity are also available here.

Lenovo Preparing An Inexpensive 4G LTE Smartphone For India

AH Lenovo Logo 1.1

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Lenovo are entering the market for smartphones with their recent purchase of Motorola from Google if you’re from one of the comfortably insulated and developed (over saturated) markets of the world. Lenovo have been manufacturing Android smartphones and tablets for some time now and today I’m bringing you news that they’re working on an inexpensive 4G LTE device to be announced at the CES, Consumer Electronics Show, at Las Vegas. The rumors are suggesting that the new device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor and it’ll be destined for the Indian market, to be priced less than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G, which went on sale today at in Rs. 9,999, just under $160 or a little over £100. We don’t have any other information to go on at the moment.

Lenovo opting for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 is interesting because it’s another win for the American chip maker in what remains a competitive market. The Snapdragon 410 is the follow up act to the very successful Snapdragon 400 processor, which has been used in a large number of devices as diverse as the Motorola Moto G and a few off the Lenovo tablets. The 410 is similarly clocked at 1.2GHz but features revised, 64-bit compatible architecture that promises 25% higher performance plus reduced power consumption compared with the older generation (and 32-bit only) chipset. Perhaps the new, unannounced device is similar to the Lenovo K3 smartphone that was recently revealed, which also uses the Snapdragon 410 processor. It too comes with 4G LTE support but the rest of the specification has been filled out: a 5-inch HD screen, an 8MP rear camera, 1 GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 2,300mAh battery and dual-SIM functionality. The K3 runs Android 4.4 KitKat with no word of when it might be upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Why the sudden interest in 4G LTE handsets for India? It’s because Indian LTE coverage is currently underdeveloped but several operators are planning on enabling LTE coverage next year. We’ve already seen the Microsoft (Nokia) Lumia 638, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G and Micromax YUREKA devices announced or launched, which support the Indian 2.3GHz and 1.8GHz LTE Bands 40 and 3 respectively. So if you’re in India and you want an inexpensive LTE-capable device, you will shortly have the choice of at least four devices. We’re expecting more to follow in the coming weeks and months.

Samsung Adds Milk VR Streaming to Gear

The battle of the VR headsets now includes Facebook, Sony, probably Microsoft, and Samsung…but Samsung has just made an interesting move with the launch of its Gear Milk VR streaming service.

Samsung’s streaming service addresses a concern in the VR market: Everyone is adopting or creating these fancy new devices that have some pretty great demos available at big events, but there isn’t much actual content out in the real world for people to use yet, and that content needs to be there to generate demand. So far, all we have is a lot of interesting ideas.

Milk VR is Samsung’s attempt to turn some of these promises into real products. It can stream a variety of different videos (which are created and distributed by others) into the Gear VR device. These videos are available in 360-degree glory, and currently divided into several different categories such as music, sports, action, and lifestyle.

All right, so it’s not exactly an immersive video game or an interactive training module, but Milk VR does help get some real content out into the world with an eye on good timing. Sure, a music video may not be the best option for 360-degree video, and in sports most of the action only happens in one direction, but this of the other possibilities. A video of a safari, or Times Square at New Year’s, or a diving expedition, could definitely be worth the experience.

The Milk VR creation is also notable because, much like YouTube, it provides a space for people, businesses, and other organizations to create their own VR videos and share them with others. This is an innovative approach to the VR market, and could lead to a lot of creativity in the coming years and more people start getting creative.

This VR streaming service is free, but you need a few products to make it work. Up first is the $200 Gear VR, of course. However, you will also need to use a Galaxy Note (Note 4 or newer) along with it.

Coravin Lets You Try Wine Without Popping A Cork

Wine is a lot of fun, but it’s also a commitment. You spend some money on some wine, it’d better be good stuff. But you don’t generally know until you pop that cork and pour a glass and, of course, you can’t return opened wine. Coravin, though, lets you have a glass without opening the bottle.

Classical Gas

How? Through the wonders of argon! Yes, the gas.

Coravin is essentially a little wine thief. You insert a narrow needle into the bottle, and it pressurizes said bottle with argon. You might remember from high school chemistry that argon is an “inert” gas, meaning that it doesn’t react with anything. That means the wine’s flavor, bouquet, and other stuff people say about wine isn’t affected.

The pressure runs the wine up through the needle and into your glass, so you can have a glass without busting out the whole bottle.

In Vino Veritas

coravin 2

The advantages are fairly obvious: Instead of committing to a bottle of wine, you can just try a glass. Or, if it’s really good wine, you can hook up the system and keep it there. The system works in such a way that you can keep the wine pressurized for a while and only have a glass when you feel like it.

At $300, it’s not a cheap gift for the wine snob in your life. But it’s a useful way to make them commit to actually giving you some of those great wines they claim to own. Come on, now you don’t have to open the cork. Make with the vino, suckers!

Careful, the Sony Xperia Z3 can also bend in your jeans like an iPhone 6

Sony Xpeira Z3 bent 1

The iPhone 6’s notorious bending issue — also known as #bendgate — easily made the list of our top 3 biggest fails of the year. With only a few days left in 2014, we figured we’d add one more device to the list of smartphones that could potentially bend in your skinny jeans before we officially retire #bendgate once and for all (we hope).

Sony Xperia Z3 bent 2

As discovered by a now ex-Sony fan on Google+, the Sony Xperia Z3 isn’t immune to the “design flaw” that claimed the lives of so many iPhones (and made one YouTuber filthy rich). According to owner, the phone mysteriously and unexpectedly bent in his pant pocket. After bad experiences with previous Sony devices, he’s now ready to call it quits on all Sony smartphones for good.

“This is what happens when you put a Xperia Z3 in your pocket. I previously owned a Z1 and that blew up on me. This is my friends Z3, another friend has a Z3 compact and the back cracked from normal usage. Conclusion: Xperia Z Phones are subpar and not worth the money, too many failures to ignore.

As a current (very happy) owner of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, I’d say the glass backing does make me a bit nervous, but after a few minor drops I can say it’s definitely much more durable than that old Nexus 4 I used to own.

As our smartphones become larger with every iteration, it’s kind of funny how manufacturers still feel the need to keep that slim profile (sometimes even sacrificing battery capacity as a result). Seems like it’s only normal to expect that a firm amount of pressure could cause just about any smartphone to bend, but I think you have to be extra careful when they’re made of metal like the Xperia Z3.

What say ye? Anyone have a Sony or any other make smartphone that bent in your jeans? Should OEMs be concerned about their smartphones bending in their customers’ skinny jeans?

Alcatel Onetouch Purchases The Palm Inc. Trademarks From HP

AH Palm-1

Some of you may remember Palm, the company that was once regarded as one of the go-to tools for anyone seeking the capabilities of a handheld PDA(yes, we said PDA aka personal data assistant)as they offered up a way for users to get email, browse the web and keep schedulers for all those oh so important dates and events. Palm started as a business tool for professionals, but they quickly became adopted by the mass market and anyone looking for what it offered. Over the years they transformed from a PDA into a smartphone running the WebOS platform, although they nearly went out of business before devices like the Palm Pre and other similar smartphones hit the market due to competitors coming out with Android devices and of course the all mighty iPhone.

Eventually, Palm ended up selling and dying off anyway, despite their best efforts. They were purchased by HP who tried to offer consumers the beauty of WebOS(which was actually a pretty cool platform if you never got the chance to use it)but again, HP’s efforts to bring Palm back from the dead in the form of the WebOS running tablets they sold for a time had failed. We would think that Palm is gone, but that may not be the case as it appears they may yet again be reborn under the guise of a new brand. Alcatel Onetouch seems to have purchased the Palm trademarks from HP, which at this point technically means nothing because Alcatel may not have any plans to resurrect Palm at all. At least, not in the way that we remember Palm devices.

For now, Alcatel hasn’t made any official statements as to the reasons why they acquired the Palm brand, and it might be a bit hopeful on my part to think that they could be bringing a newly refreshed and revamped Palm family of devices to the masses in the future, but it isn’t an impossible notion for them to consider. It’s also a bit presumptuous to think that they could completely drop the Alcatel Onetouch name and decide to swap it out for Palm, but then again Palm is sort of a household brand that many people are familiar with and remember, we’d wager to say much more so than Alcatel. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Alcatel’s plans are for the Palm name, if anything.

‘The Interview’ Officially The Top Selling Movie On Google Play And YouTube For 2014

The Interview

This Christmas has been an eventful one. In fact, so far, 2014 has been a rather eventful year with a lot of strange devices (here’s looking at you Samsung Galaxy Note Edge) as well as a couple of bust-ups (here’s looking at you OnePlus and Cyanogen). However, one of the stranger and more recent stories, has been the ongoing saga of North Korea/Sony Hack/The Interview. This has been a real-life movie script revolving around a fictional movie script. The Interview was due to be released on Christmas Day in the US although after the Sony hack, movie theatres began to get a little edgy and all subsequently withdrew their interest in showing the movie through fears of similar attacks. However that all led to Sony and Google teaming up to release the movie.

It was reported last week that the movie would be shown on Google Play starting Christmas Eve. It was also available via Xbox Video and on YouTube. The movie was set at a standard rate of $15.99 to buy and $5.99 to rent. Since then the news emerged that the movie had managed to generate $15 million dollars between Christmas Eve and Saturday solely by its online revenues. This was quite a massive figure for just online sales. To compare, the movie did get a limited theater release although this was largely through independent and indie theaters with the larger chain theaters still abstaining. That said, the movie only managed to generate $2.47 million via the theater avenue.

Well, the latest news is that based on the high selling figures online and that massive $15 million generated it seems The Interview has officially become the top selling movie on both Google Play and YouTube for 2014. This is probably not too surprising as the hype and drama behind the release of The Interview did set the groundwork and the wheels in motion for the movie to instantly take off like it did. That said though, you can be sure, generating $15 million via online sales only (and in a matter of days) will start the bigwigs thinking about the future of movie releases via channels like YouTube and Google Play. Were you one of those who contributed to the $15 million tally? Did you like the movie? Let us know.

Rumor: Samsung Allegedly Confirms The Release Of Android Lollipop To Devices In January

Android Lollipop Banner

If you’re a Samsung device owner and are ready and waiting for the update to the latest version of Android software, it appears you won’t be waiting much longer. A post on reddit from a person that claims to be an employee of Samsung has outed that Samsung is gearing up(pun intended, I know.. bad puns are bad)for a release of Android Lollipop on multiple devices in January. That’s literally just in the next few days, of course that doesn’t mean we should expect updates to start flowing on January 1st. The alleged employee states that he received this news from Samsung internally by email asking that employees begin preparing store devices for the lollipop update(image below of the email screenshot that was uploaded)and further states which devices Samsung plans to attack first with the software upgrade.

Perhaps unsurprisingly and according to this post, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be the first device that Samsung focuses on for the launch of this software, followed by the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge, succeeded by the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 which are last year’s models. Following that set of devices Samsung will reportedly move to upgrading tablets, although the post on reddit makes no mention of which tablets specifically those might be.

There wasn’t much else in terms of details like exact timeframe, although the redditer did state that they have been instructed to tell people that Lollipop is “coming soon” as a response for answering questions about the update. Whether or not this pans out to be true remains to be seen but January is only a few days away, and it’s entirely possible that we could see the updates hit devices as soon as the end of this week, although don’t quote me on that as I’m merely speculating. This if anything other than alerting us to the Lollipop upgrade being this coming month, gives Samsung users a reason to keep a watchful eye on their status bars to see of the OTA comes through. The poster also made a point to acknowledge people’s questions on reddit in response to his post, and that they will answer anything they can as more information comes in. You can find the link to the reddit post below if you want to join the conversation.
