Gmail And Google Chat Now Let You Set A Custom Status On The Web

Gmail and Google Chat on the web now let you set a custom status. The status pop-up that appears on tapping the pill-shaped status indicator button next to the search bar now includes an additional “Add a status” option that lets you “Write your own” status.

Earlier, this pop-up menu only featured three preset statuses: Automatic, Do not disturb, and Set as away. The three options are distinguished with different color dots (green, red, and white respectively). A fourth orange-colored “Idle” status also appears automatically based on your recent activity. The new “Add a status” option now comes with a pencil icon. Once you’ve set up your first custom status, your status will replace this button. You can edit or delete the status by tapping it from the same menu.

For custom statuses, you need to specify an expiry date/time. There are presets but you can manually set the time when you want the status to automatically clear. You can also select an optional emoji to appear along with your custom status, just to make it blend seamlessly with the color-coded dots that accompany the three preset statuses.

As spotted by Ron Amadeo of Ars Technica (via 9to5Google) recently, Google also offers some suggestions for custom statuses. Those include “Be right back” (30 minutes), “Commuting” (1 hour), “Out sick” (Today), and “Vacationing” (This week), with matching emojis, of course.

Custom status support on Gmail and Google Chat is now rolling out widely

Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) has gone through a lot of changes, both internal as well as user-facing, since its renaming in October last year. Al those changes are part of Google’s push for a more integrated productivity experience, merging Gmail, Chat, and Meet.

Earlier this month, Google Workspace became available for everyone, including users with free accounts. Alongside this rollout, the company also streamlined navigation on Gmail web client and renamed Google Chat’s “Rooms” as “Spaces”.

Google said this restructuring will be followed by several new features such as presence indicators custom statuses. The latter is now seemingly starting to roll out on the web client for both Gmail and Google Chat. Make sure you have the integrated Gmail experience enabled to be able to access the new features.

Note that the custom status feature is not yet available in Gmail or Google Chat for Android and iOS. It’s unclear when Google plans to introduce the new option to Gmail and Google Chat mobile apps.
