In India, it’s not quite as simple as offering a smartphone on contract with a huge subsidy and then watching it fly off of shelves. Not only are contracts in the region far more expensive then they are elsewhere, but smartphones are often close to twice their price here in the West. For a smartphone to be successful in India it needs to be affordable, and having decent battery life is often a big plus, too. Lenovo has become a big name in China, and has been steadily expanding into India as well, and the A500 – a device we’ve heard quite a bit about – is finally launching in the region.
On the face of it, the A5000 isn’t really much to write home about, but when you consider it costs just RS 9,999 and features a fairly large 4,000 mAh battery it starts to sound like very good value, indeed. That massive battery gives the A5000 roughly 35 hours of talk time. Other specs include a quad-core MT6582 from MediaTek clocked at 1.3 Ghz, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. An 8-megapixel camera and 5-inch 720p display round out the specs here, and there’s Android 4.4 KitKat running the show here.
On paper, this doesn’t seem all that great, especially with an outdated version of Android onboard. However, we need to take into account its low price tag and the focus on battery life here. After all, battery life is very important in India. It’s not quite as simple as just finding an outlet right when you need it and those on the road might find it difficult to charge up while working. Plus, it’s a Lenovo handset so that means you’ll be buying from a reputable name. It’s available to order right now from TheDo Store in either black or white and will ship from April 30th. It supports Dual-SIM as well as 3G support. Hopefully an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop won’t be too far behind.
