Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon Smart Protect

Qualcomm MWC 15 AH 12

This morning, Qualcomm announced a new anti-malware prevention, that will be starting with the Snapdragon 820. We should begin seeing devices with the 820 coming out early next year. Snapdragon Smart Protect here, uses machine learning to better detect malware as well as improving security and privacy.

The company states that the new Smart Protect will complement the signature-based anti-malware services, as well as finding new threats prior to signature updates. Additionally, it’ll also be monitoring apps and services ensuring that there are no malicious activity going on. This is all being done in real time, so it’ll be interesting to see how battery is affected here. Qualcomm also stated that they will be providing API’s that can be used for anti-malware providers to perform analysis. Avast, AVG and Lookout are also working closely with Qualcomm for Smart Protect. The cooperation is so that Qualcomm can ensure that their new feature works with other anti-malware and anti-virus apps available on other smartphones and tablets already.

“With consumers storing more personal information on their devices, data leakage incidents and malware are on the rise. Qualcomm Technologies is uniquely equipped to address these issues with our ability to access lower layers of the software stack and dedicated security hardware, to create a device-based, behavioral analysis approach for mobile security,” said Asaf Ashkenazi, director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Snapdragon Smart Protect supports deep on-device monitoring for nearly instantaneous notifications of detected privacy violations and malicious activity while also providing great system performance and battery life.”

Adding Smart Protect to their suite of security services should give the end-user piece of mind, when it comes to security and such. We’ll definitely be interested to see how well Smart Protect works with the Snapdragon 820 early next year, and also be interested to see what other processors Qualcomm brings the feature too. Smart Protect is being developed by their subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., or QTI for short. Smart Protect joins the other features in their Haven Security Suite. Which includes SecureMSM Technology, Sense ID, Studio Access and more. Most of you are probably most familiar with the Sense ID, seeing as it uses ultrasound waves to read you fingerprint and can actually be done in the bezel of a smartphone and not need a physical button.

This could be a way for Qualcomm to hype up the Snapdragon 820 after a somewhat disappointing year, when it comes to the Snapdragon 615, 808 and 810, all of which seemed to have some issues. They are promising better results when it comes to the Snapdragon 820, and hopefully they deliver. But Smart Protect is pretty interesting, and we’re excited to test it out early next year.
