Blackberry was once the queen of smartphones but in the last few years it has been in a downwards spiral, mainly because of the huge success of Apple and Android phones. Many have wondered why the company didn’t release an Android device yet, but the rumors of such smartphone have been running around for a while. However, this time it seems that we are closer than ever for seeing a handset from the Canadian manufacturer running Google’s system. To this date there are two different Android phones that have been spotted: a special version of the Blackberry Passport, which was even caught on video, and the Blackberry Venice, a completely new device with a sliding keyboard and monster specs. A few days ago we have seen a huge leak with several photos of the Venice and more recently a tipster sent one more image for PhoneArena and also “confirmed” some of the rumored specs.
The device is likely to have a 5.4 inche Quad HD (1440 x 2560) display with curved edges, an hexa-core 64-bit Snapdragon 808 CPU with each core running at 1.8 GHz and the Adreno 418 GPU. The powerhouse will be accompanied by 3 GB of RAM and a huge 3XXX mAh battery. The cameras are also going to be massive with an 18 megapixels rear shooter with Optical Image Stabilization and a 5 MP front-facing sensor. Security is one of the main concerns for Blackberry and the tipster says that this aspect is “second to none”. Previous leaks suggested that the company will put a heavily modified version of Android, however, all leaked pictures show an almost-stock interface. It’s most important characteristic is the sliding physical keyboard, a Blackberry signature.
Recently, the company’s CEO John Chen spoke with Re/Code and provided some quotes on why they haven’t released an Android phone yet, saying “it’s a little more complex”. We don’t know if these devices are just an experiment or if it’s the real deal but the rumors point for a November launch date and the Venice should be put on sale with options for both systems – Android and BB10. As for availability, it will be offered by all four major U.S. carriers. There isn’t any information regarding the price but with these specs expect it to be expensive.
