In this article, we’ll compare the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 III. These two smartphones are the best these two companies have to offer, without a doubt. These are the latest, and most powerful flagships Xiaomi and Sony announced. Both of these phones are quite large, but there are quite a few differences worth talking about here. There are differences in the design department, but also in various other aspects.
Neither of these two phones is cheap, they’re actually both priced well over $1,000. They are quite different in regards to what they bring to the table, though, as the two companies took somewhat different approaches here. First, we’ll take a look at their specifications side-by-side, and then we’ll move to a number of other categories. We’ll first move to the design department, and then to display, performance, battery, camera, and audio sections. That being said, let’s compare the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 III, shall we.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 III: Design
Both of these phones come with a frame made out of metal, aluminum in both cases. The Xperia 1 III has a glass back, while Xiaomi opted for ceramic for the Mi 11 Ultra. That ceramic backplate is one of the reasons the Mi 11 Ultra is considerably heavier than the Xperia 1 III. It weighs 234 grams, while the Xperia 1 III weighs 186 grams. That is the difference you will feel in the hand, by the way.
The Xperia 1 III does have a smaller display, but it’s a bit taller than the Mi 11 Ultra. Why? Well, Sony opted for an extremely high display aspect ratio once again, 21:9. Its flagship is considerably narrower because of that, though. The Xperia 1 III is only 71mm wide, compared to 74.6mm of the Mi 11 Ultra. The Xperia 1 III does have more bezel (top and bottom) than the Mi 11 Ultra, but it does not include a display camera hole because of it.
The Mi 11 Ultra comes with a curved display, while the Xperia 1 III offers a flat panel. More on that later. The Mi 11 Ultra’s camera island on the back is a lot larger than the Xperia 1 III’s, and that’s an understatement. Xiaomi did use much larger sensors than Sony, across the board. Do note that both of these phones are quite slippery, so using a case may be a good idea. Both are difficult to use with one hand, but the Mi 11 Ultra more than the Xperia 1 III. Why? Well, it’s much heavier, and much wider, while its sheer design makes it a bit more slippery as well. Both phones do feel like really premium devices while you hold them.
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 III: Display
The (main) displays on both of these phones are gorgeous, the Mi 11 Ultra also has a secondary display. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra delivers a 6.81-inch QHD+ (3200 x 1440) AMOLED main display. This panel offers an aspect ratio of 20:9, and it can project up to 1 billion colors. It offers a 120Hz refresh rate, and it does support HDR10+ content, while it’s curved. Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus protects this display, and the panel does get really bright at 1,700 nits peak brightness. The secondary display is placed on the back of the phone, it’s a tiny 1.1-inch AMOLED panel
The Sony Xperia 1 III, on the flip side, has a 6.5-inch 4K panel (3840 x 1644), with an aspect ratio of 21:9. This is an OLED panel that can also project up to 1 billion colors, and it does support a 120Hz refresh rate, but not while you use 4K resolution. It does support HDR content, and it’s also protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus. This display is flat, not curved like the one on the Mi 11 Ultra.
Both of these displays are quite large, and they’re actually both excellent. There’s really not much to complain about here, to be quite honest. They both look excellent out of the box, but you can fine-tune things. Both are more than sharp enough for basically anything, and there’s no way you’ll notice pixelization, or anything of the sort. The colors are punchy, the viewing angles are excellent, and those blacks are as deep as you’d expect them to be. One thing worth noting is that the Mi 11 Ultra’s display is considerably brighter, but the Xperia 1 III’s panel is more than bright enough, so… that’s not exactly a minus either.
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 III: Performance
The performance is exactly what you’d expect out of phones that cost over $1,000. They’re both truly excellent in that regard. That’s not surprising considering their internals, though. Both of these smartphones are fueled by the Snapdragon 888 SoC, while they come with fast RAM and flash storage as well. On top of that, Android 11 comes pre-installed on both smartphones, with respective overlays from the two companies. Those software offerings are considerably different in comparison, but they both work really well.
In regular, day-to-day usage, you won’t notice any lag or anything of the sort. They both breeze through browsing, multitasking, opening / closing apps, multimedia consumption, and so on. The same actually goes for gaming, both of them can become gaming machines, if you want them to. One thing worth noting, though, is the fact that the Xperia 1 III does get quite warm. It gets quite warm with regular prolonged usage, let alone gaming. It’s not so warm you can’t hold it, but you’ll notice the warmth, definitely, as it’s higher than in its competitors. That’s a bit odd, and Sony will hopefully be able to fix that via upcoming updates.
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 III: Battery
The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra features a 5,000mAh battery, while the Xperia 1 III comes with a 4,500mAh battery pack. Having said that, both of these phones do offer good battery life, but not great. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra can get up to 6 hours of screen on time, though that will depend on your usage. If you’re gaming a lot, you won’t come close to such numbers. The Xperia 1 III stands noticeably lower in that regard, as you’ll get closer to 5 hours of screen on time. Once again, Sony will probably try to fix that via software updates, to optimize battery consumption, but at the moment, it’s not great.
Both phones offer fast charging. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra supports 67W fast wired charging, and 67W fast wireless charging. 10W reverse wireless charging is also included. The Xperia 1 III comes with 30W fast wired charging, fast wireless charging support, and reverse wireless charging as well. Needless to say, the Mi 11 Ultra has the advantage here, as both its wired and wireless charging offerings are considerably faster than what the Xperia 1 III has to offer.
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 III: Cameras
When it comes to cameras, both of these phones are excellent. Xiaomi came a long way when it comes to camera quality, while the Xperia 1 III is a considerable improvement over the Xperia 1 II. During good lighting, both phones can capture excellent-looking shots with great white balance, excellent dynamic range, and plenty of detail. Even the colors look excellent, though a bit more unrealistic on the Mi 11 Ultra.
Ultra-wide cameras on both devices are great in such conditions, while the periscope camera on the Mi 11 Ultra also does a good job during the day. You’re probably wondering if the phones are any good in low light? Well, yes, they are. Both can capture lots of details with low noise in low-lit environments. The Mi 11 Ultra does manage to pull out more detail from the shadows, though, but only because the phone tends to brighten up darker parts of an image more than the Xperia 1 III. The shots from the Xperia 1 III are close to real-life in such conditions, that’s a fact. The same goes for daytime shots as well.
Audio
Both the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and the Sony Xperia 1 III offer stereo speakers. These are not the best speakers around, but they’re quite good. They do get loud enough, with great audio sharpness, and they’re also well-balanced. The Mi 11 Ultra’s speakers do get a bit louder, but not by much. Xiaomi’s speakers are also tuned by Harman Kardon, in case you were wondering.
In regards to the 3.5mm headphone jack, only the Xperia 1 III offers it. If that’s something you need, Sony was kind enough to include it here. With the Mi 11 Ultra, you’ll have to fall back to the Type-C port, with either a pair of Type-C headphones, or a dongle. You can, of course, hook up a good pair of wireless headphones instead. The audio provided by both phones is really good across the spectrum, we don’t have any major complaints, though it’s not the best around.
