Since there won’t be a Galaxy Note phone this year, the Galaxy S22 series will be Samsung’s next flagship offerings. Expected to launch in January 2022, there’s still a long way to go before the new devices start taking shape. However, the industry is already taking delight in early leaks and rumors. The latest is that the most premium model, i.e. the Galaxy S22 Ultra, will feature a 200-megapixel camera. The information comes from Korean publication Pulse News citing multiple industry sources.

Now if you recall, noted leaker Ice Universe had recently claimed that the Galaxy S22 series will take a backseat in the megapixel wars. The Galaxy S22 Ultra was said to continue using the third-gen 108-megapixel sensor (ISOCELL HM3), an improved version of the camera found in the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

But the new report contradicts that claim. Perhaps that’s because it’s still too early and all these claims are based on some unconfirmed insider information, or maybe just calculated guesses. There’s no doubt Samsung is working on a 200-megapixel camera for smartphones. However, whether it will use the upcoming high-res camera in its next-gen Galaxy flagship, only time will tell.

There are reports that the vanilla Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22+ will use a 50-megapixel sensor for the main camera. After all, a higher megapixel count doesn’t necessarily mean better pictures. Plenty of other factors also play in the making of a great camera.

Galaxy S22 Ultra could get a penta-camera setup

The latest report also suggests that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will get five cameras on the back. The cameras will be developed in partnership with the Japanese camera brand Olympus. Reports of a collaboration between Samsung and Olympus have been floating since April this year. However, it’s unclear whether the two companies are joining forces for technological developments or it’s just a marketing gimmick, as we have come to see from many other smartphone brands in recent years.

Lastly, the new report suggests the Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature S Pen support. That’s very much expected as the Galaxy S21 Ultra also supports the S Pen.

The Galaxy S22 series is still likely in the early phases of development. Samsung has a big Galaxy Unpacked event coming up next month, where it will unveil two new foldables, two new smartwatches, and a new pair of TWS earbuds. Once that event is past us, we could start hearing more about the company’s next big release – the Galaxy S22 series.
