Where Is Malaysia Placed In Bloomberg’s Covid Resilience Ranking?

Bloomberg has just released its list of Covid Resilience Ranking for June 2021, citing the best and worst places to be in as some parts of the world are starting to reopen.

Malaysia has unfortunately dropped to the bottom of the list. Out of 53 economies measured in economy size of more than US$200 billion, our country has fallen from 16th (back in January 2021) to 51st place.

Covid Resilience Ranking

When countries race to reopen Bloomberg took into consideration the following score:

  • People who have been vaccinated
  • Lockdown severity
  • Flight capacity
  • Vaccinated travel routes

The US is now sitting on the no.1 spot thanks to its fast and expansive vaccine rollout as well as supplies. Other countries in the top 10 like Switzerland, France and Spain have also started opening its borders to vaccinated tourists. Life at “Covid havens” countries like New Zealand (#2) and Singapore (#3) have been able to enjoy some normalcy by implementing border curbs and lengthy quarantines to keep daily cases at a minimum.

While Singapore is among the top 3 Asian countries on the ranking, Malaysia is sitting right at the bottom with India and Philippines. Our vaccination rate (10.8%) is still way behind Singapore’s 44.1%. Hopefully the government can pick up the pace in the coming months.

Are you hopeful we can improve in the Covid Resilience Ranking?
